Michael says the big mistake we the Spanish make with adjectives is to try and pluralize them. We add an "s" to an adjective when it modifies a noun that is in the plural. We say "blues eyes" instead of "blue eyes," which is the correct form. You must never add an "s" to an adjective. Never. Never! Never! Never ever! Never, never, never! And never means never.

Michael dice que el error más grande que cometemos los españoles al usar adjetivos en inglés consiste en que añadimos una "s" a un adjetivo que modifica un sustantivo que está en su forma plural. Decimos "blues eyes" queriendo decir "ojos azules," cuando para decir ojos azules en inglés lo que tenemos que decir es "blue eyes." Nunca se debe añadir una "s" a un adjetivo. Nunca. ¡Nunca! ¡Nunca! ¡Nunca jamás! ¡Nunca, nunca, nunca! Y nunca significa jamás.





I´m listening to a song that can help me remember this rule. It´s called "Human," and it´s by The Killers.

Estoy escuchando una canción que puede ayudarme a recordar esta regla. Se llama "Human" y es de The Killers.
This song is special because when people first heard it, they didn´t know what it was about. The singer asked a strange question: "Are you human or are you dancer?" That sounds specially strange in English because people thought the singer shouldn´t have said "dancer." He should have said "a dancer" or "dancers."

Esta canción es especial porque cuando la gente la escuchó por primera vez no sabía de que iba. El cantante hacía una pregunta extraña: "¿Eres humano o eres bailarín?" Eso no suena tan mal en español, pero en inglés suena fatal, porque en inglés "dancer" siempre se había usado como un sustantivo y hay que decir "¿Eres humano o eres un bailarín?" o "¿Sois humanos o sois bailarines?"
Some people thought the singer wasn´t saying dancer. They thought he was saying "denser." Dense is an adjective that can mean stupid in English. They thought the singer was asking people if they were more stupid than humans ought to be.

Algunas personas pensaron que el cantante no estaba diciendo "dancer," que significa bailarín, sino "denser," ya que en inglés el adjetivo denso significa estupido, tonto. Creían que el cantante estaba preguntando a la gente si eran humanos o más tontos de lo que deberian ser los seres humanas.
The Killers had to explain what their song was about. It turned out that they were using "dancer" as an adjective, and that´s why the word didn´t have an "s."

Los Killers tuvieron que explicar de que iba su canción. Resulta que estaban utilizando la palabra "dancer," que significa "bailarín" en español, como un adjetivo, y no como un sustantivo. Por eso ni usaban un artículo, ni añadían la "s" del plural a esta palabra.
Their song was about being really human and thinking for yourself. Or, instead, just doing what others did without thinking. They said people who didn´t think for themselves weren´t human. They were "dancer." It was as if they were just dancing, following the beat without really existing. Like puppets attached to cords. Just as "human" can be an adjective, they felt "dancer" could be an adjective too.

Su canción era sobre ser realmente humano y pensar por ti mismo. O, en vez, solamente hacer lo que hacen los demás sin pensar para nada. Dicen que la gente que no piensa por si misma es gente "bailarina." Es como si sólo bailasen siguiendo el compás en lugar de existir de verdad. Como si fuesen marionetas atadas a unas cuerdas. Del mismo modo que "humano" puede usarse como adjetivo, "bailarín" tambien puede usarse como adjetivo, aunque probablemente nadie lo había usado así en inglés hasta que lo hicieron los Killers en esta canción.
