Arithmomania / Aritmomanía

Aislene

Girls, what are you doing? ¿Counting garlic cloves again? It´s a sick obession!

¿Niñas, qué estáis haciendo? ¿Pero otra vez contando dientes de ajo? ¡Es una obsesión enferma!

Branna

Mum, we can´t avoid it. We´re vampires.

Mamá, no podemos evitarlo. Somos vampiresas.

Fiona

We´ve got arithmomania, like all vampires.

Tenemos aritmomanía, como todos los vampiros.

Aislene

It makes me sick to see you counting there like crazy. This is the last time fresh garlic enters my house. From now on, I´m using it grounded. Alpin, eat all that garlic.

Alpin

I don´t want to.

No quiero.

Aislene

Whyever not? They´re very healthy and you eat everything.

Alpin

Well, I don´t want to now.

Pues ahora no quiero.

Aislene

It´s because of that awful ghost, isn´t it, darling? You´re so frightened that you´ve lost your appetite.

Alpin

I´m going to make an effort and eat them just for you, Mum.

Fiona

What ghost? ¿Nuño Paez? You´ve seen Nuño?

¿Qué fantasma? ¿Nuño Paez? ¿Has visto a Nuño?

Aislene

No! That horrible man who haunts the forest. That...Arthur or... Arminius or...

¡No! Arminio o...

Fiona

Artemius?

¿Artemio?

Aislene

That horrible man, whatever his name is, gave your brother the fright of his life the other day.

Branna

Mum! I told you that´s not true. I was there. He only told Alpin to leave because it wasn´t the right place for him to be at that moment.

¡Mama!

Aislene

He frightened the wits out of my baby. I´m going to protest. I´m going to go see that thug and tell him he can´t treat children like he does.

Voy a protestar.

Branna

Mum! Don´t be ridiculous!

¡Mamá! ¡No seas ridícula!

Fiona

Branna is right. Artemius is ice.

Branna tiene razón. Artemio es legal.

Branna

Mum, the only frightening thing there is in or out of the forest is Alpin. We´re all scared of what he might do, or what he might think or what he might be tomorrow.

Fiona

You, kid, let go of those garlic bulbs. They´re for all of us!

Tu, niño, suelta esos ajos. ¡Qué son para todos!

Alpin

Mum said I have to eat them. She said you mustn´t count them.

Fiona

I´m going to teach you to divide them among us three in two different ways, in case you don´t understand one of them.

Branna

Yes, this is the Spanish way of dividing things. Twelve bulbs of garlic divided by three kids means we each get four garlic bulbs.

Fiona

And this is the English way. Twelve bulbs of garlic divided by three kids means we each get four garlic bulbs.

Alpin

If the result is the same, why are the illustrations different?

Branna

Because the dividend, the divisor, the quotient and the remainder are in different places.

Alpin

I don´t like to divide in Spanish or in English. I want all the garlic bulbs for myself.

Fiona

You see, Mum, he´s himself again.

Branna

There´s nothing wrong with Alpin. Or with Artemius.

No le pasa nada a Alpin. Ni a Artemio.
