Mum, I’m going to have to ask you formally to stop asking me to ask the Púca to change Alpin back to normal. You haven’t given me a moment’s peace since Christmas dinner, and either you let things stand or I’m not setting a foot in this house ever again despite my weakness for your plum cake.

Mamá, voy a tener que pedirte en serio que dejes de pedirme que le pida al Puca que vuelva a dejar a Alpin como estaba. No me has dejado en paz ni un minuto desde la cena de navidad, y o dejas que las cosas sigan como están o no vuelvo a pisar esta casa a pesar de mi debilidad por tu bizcocho de frutas.

If you hadn’t asked me not to ask him to change Alpin back to normal, I would have asked him myself that very night. And as if it weren’t enough to have asked me not to ask, you also asked your father not to ask either.  The least you can do now that you have tied our hands and we can't ask, is go ask yourself! In truth, you’re the most indicated asker about, because nobody can say no to you and nobody has to include the Púca.

Si no me hubieses pedido que no le pidiese al Puca que dejase a Alpin  como estaba antes de todo este embrollo, habría solucionado este problema pidiéndoselo yo misma. Pero no te bastó con anularme, también tuviste que pedirle a tu padre que no se lo pidiese él tampoco al Puca. Lo menos que puedes hacer ahora que nos has atado las manos a los dos y no podemos pedir nada, es ir tu mismo a pedírselo. En verdad eres el peticionario más indicado porque a ti nadie te puede decir que no, y nadie por fuerza ha de incluir al Puca.

I've told you a thousand times I can’t ask the Púca to undo a spell he might not be able to undo and had every right to do. Cousin Garth has to protect the forest.  It’s common knowledge that’s what all this is about and Alpin was warned repeatedly not to eat the polluted blackberries.  

Te he dicho mil veces que yo no le puedo pedir al Puca que deshaga un hechizo que podría no poder deshacer y tenía todo el derecho a hacer. El primo Garth ha de proteger el bosque. Todos sabemos que de eso va toda esta historia y a Alpin le advirtieron repetidamente que no consumiese las moras contaminadas.

I hate to have to say this, but Darcy could be right. Actually, Garth hasn’t really poisoned Alpin. Alpin is alive and well, just a little hairier. And for the first time since he was born our neighbors are on speaking terms with us. He isn’t stealing their food any more. He’s disposing of their garbage now.

Odio tener que decir esto, pero Darcy podría tener razón. En realidad, Garth no ha envenenado a Alpin.  Alpin está vivo y coleando y sólo un poco más peludo. Y por primera vez desde que nació nuestros vecinos nos dirigen la palabra sin que sea para quejarse. Alpin ya no roba su comida. Ahora sólo se ocupa de recoger la basura.

Alpin, do you think there might be any polluted blackberries left in the forest? It´s the middle of winter, so I suppose not, but I really need some.

Alpin, ¿tú crees que podría quedar alguna de esas moras contaminadas en el bosque? Estamos a mitad del invierno, así que supongo que no, pero es que realmente necesito alguna.

There are blackberries all year in many human supermarkets, sweetie. You needn’t go give that uncouth barbarian the satisfaction of acquiring a fresh victim.

Hay moras en muchos supermercados humanos durante todo el año, cielito. No necesitas darle a ese bárbaro salvaje la satisfacción de atrapar a una nueva víctima.

Clean blackberries won’t do, Mrs. D. I’ve been invited by the inhabitants of a garbage dump to dinner. We are to feast on products to be found there. I don’t think I’m going to be able to do that without supernatural help.

Las moras limpias no me servirían, Señora D. Los habitantes de un vertedero me han invitado a cenar. Hemos de degustar productos hallados ahí mismo. No creo que pueda hacer eso sin ayuda sobrenatural.

 I’m terribly apprehensive and a bit of a hypochondriac. I know germs rarely have the power to harm fairies, but… I do have problems normal fairies don’t have. Like my allergies, you know.

Soy muy aprensivo y algo hipocondríaco. Sé que los gérmenes rara vez tienen el poder de enfermar a las hadas pero…yo tengo problemas que las hadas normales no tienen, como mis alergias, ya sabe.

And on no account would I want to offend the Rubbishies. So  I’m appalled I might not be able to control my revulsion and do something gross like throw up at their hospitable table. I’m sorry I said that. I didn’t want to be rude now either.

Bajo ningún concepto quisiera herir los sentimientos de los Basuritas. Estoy aterrado de no poder contener mi repulsión y hacer algo grosero como devolver sobre su hospitalaria mesa. Siento haber dicho eso. No quería ser ordinario tampoco ahora.

I’ve already postponed the dinner three times. So I really have to do something about this. It has occurred to me that if I were to eat one of those polluted berries, and even to think of it makes me shudder though it might only take one, this might make me appreciate food in the state Alpin does. Then maybe I could handle this situation properly and without embarrassing anyone.

Ya he pospuesto esta cena tres veces. Así que no me queda otra que hacer algo de una vez para solucionar esto y se me ha ocurrido que  si fuese a comer una de esas moras contaminadas, y sólo pensar en ello me da escalofríos aunque tal vez sólo sea necesario consumir una, pues podría ser que con eso bastase para que yo pudiese apreciar comida en el estado que ahora deleita a Alpin. Tal vez entonces podría salir airoso de este entuerto y sin avergonzar a nadie.
