Curmudgeon went off with Lira, the merrow, who offered him twice as much as Salty, the pirate, to watch her husband. In a couple of months he earned so much that he got rich and has retired. Now he has redone the guard´s cottage at St. Job's Library and spends his time reading and doing sports and he has also started fussing and bickering again. He says that now that he is free to be as much a curmudgeon as he pleases. He does what he was doing in the first place, but for his personal enjoyment and with more style.

Cascarrabias se fue con Lira, la sirena, que le ofreció, por vigilar a su marido, el doble que el pirata Saladito. En un par de meses se ha hecho tan rico que se ha jubilado. Ahora ha reformado la casita del guarda de la biblioteca del Santo Job, y se dedica a leer y a practicar deporte y ha vuelto a rabiar de lo lindo. Dice que ahora que es libre puede cascar y rabiar todo lo que quiera. Hace lo mismo que hacía al principio pero por placer y con más estilo.

Working with the pirate doesn´t seem to me to be very ethical. Why don´t you go to a foreign university instead? I would like to get myself a Ph.D. I´m preparing a list of words that might be useful. Below are only a few. We can add lots more.

Have you ever heard it said of someone that he or she is richer than Midas? Or that a certain person has the golden touch? Before we say goodbye to January I would like to tell you about Midas, king of Phrygia.

¿Alguna vez habéis oído decir de alguien que es más rico o rica que Midas? ¿O que todo lo que toca cierta persona se vuelve oro? Antes de que nos despidamos de enero, quisiera hablaros de Midas, rey de Frigia.

The Phrygians couldn’t agree on who should be their king so they decided to crown the first man to show up in a wagon. And that was Midas, and this how he got to be king.

Los frigios no lograban ponerse de acuerdo sobre quién debía ser su rey, así que quedaron en coronar al primer hombre que llegase allí en una carreta. Y ese fue Midas, y esta la manera en que llegó a ser rey.

Midas was an extravagant fellow who liked to have the best of everything. When the god Dionysus, grateful for a favor Midas had done him, offered to grant him a wish, Midas said he wanted everything that he touched to turn into gold.

Midas era un individuo extravagante y le gustaba tener lo mejor de todo. Cuando el dios Dioniso, agradecido por un favor que le había hecho Midas, ofreció concederle un deseo, Midas pidió que todo lo que tocase se convirtiese en oro.



This was not a wise wish, as Midas found out as soon as he tried to have dinner and his food became inedible solid gold. Worse yet, when his daughter Zoe Marygold sneaked up behind him to give him a good night kiss, she turned into a gold statue. Midas had no choice but to ask Dionysus to take back this fatal gift.

Este no resultó ser un deseo acertado, y Midas se percató de ello en cuanto intentó cenar y su comida se convirtió en oro macizo. Peor le fue cuando su hija Zoe Caléndula se le acercó por detrás para darle un beso de buenas noches y se convirtió en una estatua de oro. A Midas no le quedó más remedio que pedir a Dioniso que retirase el fatal don..



Once things were back to normal, Midas, who had always loved plants and flowers and whose rose gardens were justly famous, decided to change his lifestyle. He spend most of his time roaming the countryside enjoying the best things in life that are free and made fast friends with the rural god Pan.



Una vez que todo había vuelto a la normalidad, Midas, que siempre había disfrutado de las plantas y las flores y cuyas rosaledas eran merecidamente famosas, decidió cambiar su estilo de vida. Pasó la mayor parte de su tiempo vagando por el campo, disfrutando de la naturaleza y de las mejores cosas de la vida que son gratis y se hizo amigo íntimo del dios Pan.

Midas admired Pan so much that when Pan competed with Phoebus Apollo to determine which of the two gods was the better musician, Midas praised Pan´s rustic flute over Apollo’s more sophisticated lyre. Apollo was so angry that he changed Midas’ ears into those of an ass.

Midas admiraba tanto a Pan que cuando este dios compitió con Febo Apolo para dejar sentado cual de los dos era mejor músico, Midas elogió la rústica flauta de Pan más que la sofisticada lira de Apolo. Apolo se enfadó tanto que cambió las orejas de Midas por las de un asno.  

Midas hid his disfigured ears under a Phrygian cap. Only his barber, sworn to secrecy, knew about the ears. The poor man did his best not to gossip, but the urge to tell someone was so great that one day he went to an isolated spot and dug a hole in the ground and whispered into the earth that King Midas had the ears of an ass. He covered up the hole and left much relieved, thinking no one would find out.



Midas escondió sus orejas desfiguradas bajo un gorro frigio. Sólo su barbero, que había jurado guardar el secreto, sabía la verdad. El pobre hombre hizo lo posible para no contarlo, pero su ansiedad era tal que un día se fue a un lugar aislado y cavó un agujero en la arena y susurró tierra adentro que Midas tenía las orejas de un asno. Tapó el agujero y se fue muy aliviado, pensando que nadie se enteraría jamás.


But some reeds grew where he had buried the secret and whenever the wind blew they would sing, “King Midas has the ears of an ass!” Of course, everyone soon found out. And now I will say goodbye to January and to you. I hope to see you soon again.

Pero crecieron unas cañas en el lugar en el que había sido enterrado el secreto y cuando el viento soplaba estas cantaban: “¡El Rey Midas tiene las orejas de un asno!” Como era de esperar, no tardó en enterarse todo el mundo. Y ahora os digo adiós a vosotros y al mes de enero. Espero volver a veros pronto.

Aquí estoy, listo para desearos a todos una feliz entrada y salida de año de parte de todos los de este blog. Y para asegurarme de que así sea, os encomendaré a las Cárites, también conocidas como las tres Gracias, para que os cuiden con esmero durante esta noche de fiesta.

They are Aglaia, whose name means Brilliance and who will see to it you shine with a special light on this night, Thalia, whose name means Bloom and who is indispensable when a party has to be luxuriant and Euphrosyne, whose name means Merriment and who will see to it you have a lot of good fun. May the goddesses of fun and joy be with you on this eve and throughout the whole new year!

Sure I would like to tell everybody what I really would like to have for Christmas, but it just won´t be possible this year. The person who draws the Toora Chronicles fell in a hallway and broke a vertebra and had to be operated. Now much better, but impossible yet to be on time.We do wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and we take this first opportunity to thank the many people who have been so supportive.   

Claro que me encantaría contaros lo que realmente quiero como regalo de navidad, pero no va a ser posible este año. La persona que dibuja las Crónicas Toora se cayó en un pasillo y se rompió una vertebra y ha tenido que ser operada. Ahora está mucho mejor, pero es imposible que lleguemos a tiempo. Sí que os deseamos a todos una muy feliz navidad, y aprovechamos esta primera oportunidad para dar las gracias a todas aquellas personas que se han interesado y han dado su apoyo.

St. Barbara / Santa Bárbara

St. Barbara, Christ's daughter,

With paper and holy water

It is traditional to recite the little prayer above enlisting St. Barbara´s help to avoid harm by lightning during a thunderstorm.

Es tradicional recitar la pequeña oración de arriba para solicitar la ayuda de Santa Bárbara con el fin de evitar sufrir daños provocados por rayos durante una tormenta.

There are two legends about St. Barbara. One tells that she refused to marry a man her father had chosen for her. So he imprisoned her in a tower with three windows where she whiled away the hours reading. When he noticed she was decorating the tower with certain symbols, he realized his daughter was a Christian. He didn't hesitate to report her to the authorities, who wanted everyone in the Roman Empire to have the same religion and worship Jupiter. And when he saw that not even the government could bully her into thinking the way they wanted her to, he himself cut off her head with a sword. But this tale doesn't end here. The minute Barbara's tyrannical father had killed her, divine justice had him struck by lightning. From Barbara we can learn to defend what we believe in. From her father, not to blandish a sword - which is pointy and made of metal - during a thunderstorm.

Hay dos leyendas sobre Santa Bárbara. Una cuenta que se negó a casarse con un hombre elegido para ella por su padre, por lo que éste la encerró en una torre con tres ventanas, donde pasaba el tiempo leyendo.Cuando él se fijó en que ella estaba decorando la torre con ciertos símbolos, se dio cuenta de que su hija era cristiana. No dudó en denunciarla a las autoridades, que querían que todos los que habitaban en el Imperio Romano tuviesen la misma religión y adorasen a Júpiter. Y cuando vió que ni el gobierno podía amedrentarla para que pensase como ellos querían que lo hiciese, él mismo le cortó la cabeza con una espada. Pero la historia no acaba aquí. En cuanto el déspota del padre de Bárbara acabó de matarla, quiso la justicia divina que un rayo le partiese. De Bárbara podemos aprender a defender aquello en lo que creemos. De su padre, a no blandir una espada, puntiaguda y hecha de metal, durante una tormenta con rayos y truenos.

The other legend holds that St. Barbara's father was an expert in explosives who had given his daughter a very liberal education and had even taught her all he knew about his trade. When he died, she went to live in a convent, which she left only to aid her people in a war against a cruel enemy. Barbara managed to blast this enemy to smithereens, but died in the final explosion.

La otra leyenda sostiene que el padre de Santa Bárbara era un experto en explosivos que había dado a su hija una educación muy liberal e incluso le había enseñado todo lo que él sabía de su oficio. Cuando murió, ella se fue a vivir a un convento, del que salió sólo para ayudar a su gente en una guerra contra un enemigo cruel. Barbara consiguió volar al enemigo en pedazos, pero murió en la explosión final.

Barbara's association with blasts of lightning and explosives have made her the patron saint of miners, who are familiar with dynamite, and of artillerymen, who fire cannons.

La relación de Bárbara con los rayos y los explosivos le ha convertido en la santa patrona de los mineros, que trabajan con dinamita, y de los artilleros, que disparan cañones.
