El Señor admite haber creado al hombre pero no recuerda por qué. Decide barrer a todos de la tierra, menos al cabal Noé. Le ordena que reuna a Sem, Cam y Jafet para construir un arca. The 8 Chinese Trigrams / Los 8 trigramas chinos

We always say that nine is our favorite number. In Feng Shui, nine is also a basic number. There are eight directions in which we can move away from the place where we are standing still, which would be the center. The Chinese give each of these directions – and also the center – a number. I have made a simple sketch so you can see all this better.

Siempre os decimos que el nueve es nuestro número favorito. En el Feng Shui también es un número fundamental. Hay ocho direcciones en las que nos podemos mover, partiendo del lugar en el que nos quedamos parados que sería el centro. Los chinos dan a cada una de estas direcciones - y también al centro - un número. He hecho un pequeño esquema para que veáis esto mejor.

Each of the eight directions corresponds to a trigram. Trigrams are drawn by drawing lines that may or may not be cut in half. Each trigram is related to the number of the place where it belongs. Below is a sketch similar to the one above, but with the trigrams added.

A cada una de las ocho direcciones le corresponde un trigrama. Los trigramas se dibujan con líneas continuas y/o interrumpidas. A cada trigrama le corresponde el número del lugar en el que se encuentra. Debajo va un esquema como el de arriba pero con los trigramas añadidos.

What is all this good for? To help put each thing in its place. Branna will now help you find your personal trigram so that you will know which is your place. For things to go well with you, it is convenient that the door to your house be in the direction that corresponds to your trigram.

Finding your trigram is an easy but slightly sexist operation. It is done one way for men and another for women. Since I am a woman and I don´t want to be prejudiced, I will be courteous and show you first how it is done for men.

Just one more detail.The Chinese year doesn´t start at the same time as the Western year. So if you were born in January or the beginning of February, to find your trigram you may have to work with the year before your western year of birth. For example, if you were born on January 5, 2003 you should do the operations with the year 2002.  

Sólo un detalle más. El año chino no empieza a la vez que el de occidente. Así que si naciste en enero o al principio de febrero, para encontrar tu trigrama puede que tengas que trabajar con el año anterior al de tu fecha de nacimiento occidental. Por ejemplo, si naciste el 5 de enero de 2003, debes hacer los cálculos con el año 2002.

I am not sure if what I am going to tell you about today, Valentine´s Day,  is one love story or two. What I do know is that this story or stories are sad.    

Lo que os voy a contar hoy, con motivo de San Valentín, no sé si es una historia de amor o si son dos. Lo que sí sé es que este cuento o cuentos son tristes.  

Echo was a nymph who spoke very well and who loved to gossip and always had interesting tales to tell. Whenever Zeus felt like flirting with the nymphs , he would order Echo to distract his wife with her chatter so that Hera would not see what he was at. Echo did not dare to disobey the king of the gods, so she did as she was told.


Eco era una ninfa que hablaba muy bien. Le encantaba chismorrear y siempre tenía cuentos muy interesantes que contar. Cuando a Zeus le apetecía flirtear con las ninfas, ordenaba a Eco que distrajese a su esposa Hera con su charla para que esta no se diese cuenta de lo que él estaba haciendo. La pobre Eco no se atrevía a desobedecer al rey de los dioses, así que hacía lo mandado.

Hera eventually discovered how her husband was cheating on her with Echo´s help. When Echo tried to excuse herself saying she had no choice but to obey Zeus, Hera accused her of having no mind of her own and fixed it so that Echo was never able to speak properly again. All poor Echo could do from that day on was repeat the last words of whatever others said.

Eventualmente Hera se enteró de que su marido la estaba engañando con la ayuda de Eco. Cuando Eco intentó excusarse diciendo que no tenía más remedio que obedecer a Zeus, Hera la acusó de no tener personalidad propia e hizo que Eco nunca volviese a hablar de forma normal. Desde ese día en adelante, lo único que la pobre Eco podía hacer era repetir las últimas palabras que pronunciaban otras personas.

Eco began to spend a lot of time alone, fleeing from the company of others and hiding in the mountains to avoid being made fun of. But one day her eyes lit on a young man who was roaming alone in the hills and she fell madly in love with him.

Eco empezó a pasar mucho tiempo sola, apartándose de los demás y escondiéndose en las montañas para evitar que se burlasen de ella. Pero un día se fijó en un joven que vagaba solo por aquellos parajes y se enamoró perdidamente de él.

The young man´s name was Narcissus. He was handsome even in excess. Eco was not the only person who desired him. But Narcissus rejected all those that courted him. As was to be expected, he also turned Echo down. Although her love was unrequited, brokenhearted Echo followed Narcissus everywhere about. That is how she got to witness the sad end that befell this youth.

El joven se llamaba Narciso. Era guapo hasta en exceso. Eco no era la única que le deseaba. Pero Narciso daba calabazas a todos los que le pretendían. Como era de esperar, también pasó de Eco. A pesar de que su amor no era correspondido, Eco, con el corazón roto, seguía a Narciso por todas partes. Por eso fue testigo del triste fin de este hermosísimo muchacho.

One day Naricssus, who had no idea what a mirror was, saw for the first time his own reflection in a pond. He fell in love with himself immediately. But the poor thing believed that the image he was seeing was that of someone who lived at the bottom of the pond. He dove into the water hoping to reach the being he loved and drowned trying to find himself.

Un día Narciso, que no tenía ni idea de lo que era un espejo, vió por primera vez su reflejo en un estanque. Inmediatamente quedó prendado de si mismo. Pero el pobre creía que la imagen que veía era la de alguien que vivía en el fondo del estanque. Se lanzó al agua para poder estar con el ser que amaba y se ahogó en el intento de encontrarse a si mismo.

The mountain nymphs drew his lifeless body out of the pond and buried it under the green grass. A lovely flower the like of which no one had seen before grew on the spot where they had buried the youth and the nymphs called it narcissus after the dead boy.

Las ninfas sacaron su cuerpo sin vida del estanque y lo enterraron bajo la hierba verde. Una hermosa flor cuyo igual nadie había visto antes creció en el lugar en el que habían sepultado al joven y las ninfas dieron  a esta el nombre de narciso en recuerdo del difunto muchacho.

Nobody ever saw poor Echo again, though it is still posible to hear her voice, especially if you are in caves or in the mountains.

Nadie volvió a ver a la pobre Eco, aunque todavía hoy es posible oírla, sobre todo si estás en cuevas o en las montañas.

Here I am right outside the office of the Masters of Feng Shui with whom I have a free session.. I´m going to pick these people up and take them to study my house. Feng Shui is the art of putting things in the right place. In theory, if everything is in its place, harmony will reign and all will go well. So, if you decorate your home according to the rules of Feng Shui, all will turn out right for you. This sounds very reasonable to me. If there is something I am a fan of, it is peace and harmony. So here I am, hoping for the best.

Oriental fairies like to take the shape of animals. Bad ones almost always disguise themselves as foxes. On February 3 we celebrated the Chinese New Year. The year of the hare has started and my grandfather always takes the shape of the animal of the year. That way, he is always in touch with the times. Have you ever heard it said of someone that he or she is richer than Midas? Or that a certain person has the golden touch? Before we say goodbye to January I would like to tell you about Midas, king of Phrygia.

¿Alguna vez habéis oído decir de alguien que es más rico o rica que Midas? ¿O que todo lo que toca cierta persona se vuelve oro? Antes de que nos despidamos de enero, quisiera hablaros de Midas, rey de Frigia.

The Phrygians couldn’t agree on who should be their king so they decided to crown the first man to show up in a wagon. And that was Midas, and this how he got to be king.

Los frigios no lograban ponerse de acuerdo sobre quién debía ser su rey, así que quedaron en coronar al primer hombre que llegase allí en una carreta. Y ese fue Midas, y esta la manera en que llegó a ser rey.

Midas was an extravagant fellow who liked to have the best of everything. When the god Dionysus, grateful for a favor Midas had done him, offered to grant him a wish, Midas said he wanted everything that he touched to turn into gold.

Midas era un individuo extravagante y le gustaba tener lo mejor de todo. Cuando el dios Dioniso, agradecido por un favor que le había hecho Midas, ofreció concederle un deseo, Midas pidió que todo lo que tocase se convirtiese en oro.



This was not a wise wish, as Midas found out as soon as he tried to have dinner and his food became inedible solid gold. Worse yet, when his daughter Zoe Marygold sneaked up behind him to give him a good night kiss, she turned into a gold statue. Midas had no choice but to ask Dionysus to take back this fatal gift.

Este no resultó ser un deseo acertado, y Midas se percató de ello en cuanto intentó cenar y su comida se convirtió en oro macizo. Peor le fue cuando su hija Zoe Caléndula se le acercó por detrás para darle un beso de buenas noches y se convirtió en una estatua de oro. A Midas no le quedó más remedio que pedir a Dioniso que retirase el fatal don..



Once things were back to normal, Midas, who had always loved plants and flowers and whose rose gardens were justly famous, decided to change his lifestyle. He spend most of his time roaming the countryside enjoying the best things in life that are free and made fast friends with the rural god Pan.



Una vez que todo había vuelto a la normalidad, Midas, que siempre había disfrutado de las plantas y las flores y cuyas rosaledas eran merecidamente famosas, decidió cambiar su estilo de vida. Pasó la mayor parte de su tiempo vagando por el campo, disfrutando de la naturaleza y de las mejores cosas de la vida que son gratis y se hizo amigo íntimo del dios Pan.

Midas admired Pan so much that when Pan competed with Phoebus Apollo to determine which of the two gods was the better musician, Midas praised Pan´s rustic flute over Apollo’s more sophisticated lyre. Apollo was so angry that he changed Midas’ ears into those of an ass.

Midas admiraba tanto a Pan que cuando este dios compitió con Febo Apolo para dejar sentado cual de los dos era mejor músico, Midas elogió la rústica flauta de Pan más que la sofisticada lira de Apolo. Apolo se enfadó tanto que cambió las orejas de Midas por las de un asno.  

Midas hid his disfigured ears under a Phrygian cap. Only his barber, sworn to secrecy, knew about the ears. The poor man did his best not to gossip, but the urge to tell someone was so great that one day he went to an isolated spot and dug a hole in the ground and whispered into the earth that King Midas had the ears of an ass. He covered up the hole and left much relieved, thinking no one would find out.



Midas escondió sus orejas desfiguradas bajo un gorro frigio. Sólo su barbero, que había jurado guardar el secreto, sabía la verdad. El pobre hombre hizo lo posible para no contarlo, pero su ansiedad era tal que un día se fue a un lugar aislado y cavó un agujero en la arena y susurró tierra adentro que Midas tenía las orejas de un asno. Tapó el agujero y se fue muy aliviado, pensando que nadie se enteraría jamás.


But some reeds grew where he had buried the secret and whenever the wind blew they would sing, “King Midas has the ears of an ass!” Of course, everyone soon found out. And now I will say goodbye to January and to you. I hope to see you soon again.

Pero crecieron unas cañas en el lugar en el que había sido enterrado el secreto y cuando el viento soplaba estas cantaban: “¡El Rey Midas tiene las orejas de un asno!” Como era de esperar, no tardó en enterarse todo el mundo. Y ahora os digo adiós a vosotros y al mes de enero. Espero volver a veros pronto.
