The story of Oedipus is a tragedy. His father, King Laius of Thebes, heard a prophecy that said Oedipus was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. As a result, the king gave the baby boy to a servant with instructions to murder hm. The servant, however, was sorry for the child and gave him to a shepherd who took him to Corinth, where the king and queen of that city raised him as their own son. When Oedipus was grown, he too heard the prophecy. He quickly left Corinth so as not to hurt the people he thought were his parents.
As luck would have it, Oedipus headed for Thebes, where his biological parents lived. On his way there he met King Laius, who attacked him and Oedipus was forced to kill him in self defense. Oedipus did not know he had just killed his father.
The city of Thebes was at that time plagued by a creature known as the Sphinx. It was part woman and part lion, and in the habit of eating people who did not know the answer to a riddle she would ask them. The riddle was: What animal is four-legged at dawn, two-legged at noon and three-legged at twilight? Oedipus knew the answer to this question. The answer was Man, because as a baby a man crawls on hands and knees, as an adult he stands on two legs and walks with two feet and when old has to use a cane to move about. The Sphinx was so angry when Oedipus answered correctly that she killed herself by jumping off the cliff she was sitting on.
When the people of Thebes heard how clever Oedipus had been, they asked him to be the new king and to marry Laius´widow, Jocasta. Oedipus accepted. He had no idea Queen Jocasta was his mother. When he and Jocasta found out, it was too late. They were so shocked that she hanged herself and Oedipus pulled his eyes out. They had four children whose lives were also marked by tragedy, but that is another story.
