A Sailor's Biblical Curse / La maldición bíblica de un marinero

When some people curse others, they may know what they are doing. This was probably  the case of the  anonymous sailor who cursed Admiral Cloudesly Shovell.  He probably knew very well what was in store for the admiral when he quoted Psalm 109 at him.

Cuando algunas personas maldicen a otras, puede que sepan lo que están haciendo. Este probablemente fue el caso del marinero anónimo que maldijo al Almirante Cloudesly Shovell. Él probablemente sabía lo que le esperaba al almirante cuando le recitó el Salmo 109.  

One day in the year 1707, Admiral Shovell was commanding a fleet  that was sailing near the Isles of Scilly during a dreadful storm. A sailor tried to warn the admiral that they were heading straight for fatal Gilstone Reef.  There was going to be a naval disaster.

Un día en el año 1707, el Almirante Shovell lideraba una flota que navegaba cerca de las Islas Sorlingas durante una espantosa tormenta. Un marinero intentó avisar al almirante de que se estaban dirigiendo hacia el Arrecife de Gilstone. Iba a haber un desastre naval.

Admiral Shovell didn’t like to be told what he had to do, and much less by a mere sailor. Without thinking twice, he had the sailor hanged for daring to give him instructions.

Al Almirante Shovell no le gustaba que le dijesen lo que tenía que hacer, y mucho menos que se lo dijese un marinerucho cualquiera. Sin pensarlo dos veces, ordenó que ahorcasen al marinero por atreverse a darle instrucciones.  

When the sailor was about to die, he recited horrific Psalm 109, which says awful things like: “They have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love…Let Satan stand at his right hand… When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin…Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.” And so on and so forth.

Cuando el marinero estaba a punto de morir, recitó el horrible Salmo 109, que dice cosas espantosas como “Me devuelven mal por bien, y odio por amor…Que Satanás esté a su diestra…Cuando fuere juzgado que salga culpable y su oración fuera para pecado…Sean sus días pocos, tome otro su oficio. Que sus hijos sean huérfanos y su mujer viuda.” Y otras muchas cosas horribles.  

Sure enough, the flag ship and three others hit the rocks just as the poor sailor had predicted. Two thousand men lost their lives there and then because of Shovell’s arrogance.

Y así fue. El buque insignia, o nave capitana, y otros tres barcos se estamparon contra las rocas, tal y como había predicho el pobre marinero. Dos mil hombres perdieron la vida debido a la arrogancia de Shovell.  

Shovell was washed up to shore where a woman who was a wrecker found him still alive. But she didn’t help him. In fact, she cut off his fingers because he was wearing valuable rings. To hide her theft, the woman then buried him on the beach though he was still living.

Las olas arrastraron a Shovell a la playa, donde le encontró, todavía vivo, una mujer que se dedicaba a lucrarse de los naufragios. En lugar de ayudarle, ella le cortó los dedos porque llevaba unos anillos muy valiosos. Luego, para encubrir el robo,  le enterró vivo en la playa.

The moral of the story is, of course, that one should learn to listen. And not to hang people for trying to give you information. Especially if they can recite Psalm 109.

La moraleja de esta historia es, naturalmente, que hay que saber escuchar. Y que no se puede ahorcar a la gente que intenta darte información. Sobre todo si son capaces de recitar el Salmo 109.
