In the art of Feng Shui the elements are five, and they are metal, water, wood, fire and earth. Metal contains water, water nurtures wood, wood feeds fire, fire produces earth and earth is where metal can be found. For a place to be auspicious, all these elements have to be present there in the necessary quantity to produce this cycle on and on. If one of these elements is missing or if there is an excess of a certain element in your house, there will be no good luck. Only horrible misfortunes will happen.

En el arte del Feng Shui, los elementos son cinco y son el metal, el agua, la madera, el fuego y la tierra. El metal contiene agua, el agua nutre a la madera, la madera alimenta al fuego y el fuego produce tierra y en la tierra se encuentra el metal. Para que un lugar sea auspicioso, ha de contener todos estos elementos en la cantidad necesaria para que se produzca este ciclo continuamente. Above is a sketch of  a map I made when I furnished my house. It is called bagua and is divided into nine sections, one for each of the eight directions and trigrams, plus the center. Each section is related to something important in life: health, career, marriage, etc. If you put an onion paper map of your house on this map you will be able to see in what spots you can work to obtain wealth, love, health, etc. You must lay your map on this scratch bagua placing the entrance to your house on top of the section where it really is. For example, the door to my house is in the southeast. That means that the front door and the hall of my house are the spots that can make me prosper if I decorate them properly with objects that represent what I wish to obtain. There is a list of examples of such objects in each section.

Arriba tenéis un mapa que hice cuando amueblé mi casa. Se llama Bagua y se divide en nueve secciones, una por cada una de las ocho direcciones y trigramas, más el centro. Cada sección corresponde a algo importante en la vida: salud, carrera, matrimonio, etc. Si pones un mapa de tu casa pintado en papel cebolla sobre mi mapa, podrás ver en que partes de tu casa tienes que trabajar para obtener dinero, amor, salud, etc. Debes colocar el mapa sobre el esbozo de Bagua de colocando la entrada a tu casa en la dirección en la que realmente está. Por ejemplo, la puerta principal de mi casa está en el sureste. Eso quiere decir que la entrada y el vestíbulo de mi casa son los lugares que pueden hacer que yo prospere económicamente si los decoro apropiadamente con objetos que representan lo que quiero obtener. Hay una lista de ejemplos de estos objetos en cada sección.

If your house is square or rectangular or round, your map and the bagua will be easy to work with. But if your house is L-shaped, or has some other kind of strange shape, sections may be missing. If, for example, the southeast corner is missing, you will have money problems unless you apply a remedy. Look at my scratch bagua to see what each section is about and what there should be in it.

Si tu casa es cuadrada o rectangular o redonda, será fácil trabajar con tu mapa y el Bagua. Pero si tu casa tiene forma de L o alguna otra forma rara, faltarán secciones. Si, por ejemplo, falta el rincón sudeste, tendrás problemas económicos a no ser que apliques un remedio. Estudiar el esbozo de Bagua para ver de que va cada sección  y que debéis colocar en ella.

For example, if you want to get married, you can put in the southwest section, which has earth for an element, objects that represent fire, because fire produces earth and will make the southwest section stronger. But don' t put objects that represent metal there, because your chances of marrying will diminish, since metal exhausts earth. Don't put objects that represent water either, because water turns earth into mud. Incompatible elements must not be put together except when you have too much of one element and want to reduce it.

Por ejemplo, alguien que se quiere casar puede poner en la sección sudoeste, que corresponde al elemento tierra, objetos que representan fuego, porque el fuego produce tierra y va a reforzar la sección sudoeste. Pero no pongas objetos que representan metal ahí, porque tus posibilidades de casarte disminuirán, puesto que el metal agota la tierra. Tampoco pongas objetos que representan agua, porque el agua convierte la tierra en lodo. Los elementos incompatibles no deben juntarse salvo cuando tienes demasiado de un elemento y quieres reducirlo.

The 8 Chinese Trigrams / Los 8 trigramas chinos

We always say that nine is our favorite number. In Feng Shui, nine is also a basic number. There are eight directions in which we can move away from the place where we are standing still, which would be the center. The Chinese give each of these directions – and also the center – a number. I have made a simple sketch so you can see all this better.

Siempre os decimos que el nueve es nuestro número favorito. En el Feng Shui también es un número fundamental. Hay ocho direcciones en las que nos podemos mover, partiendo del lugar en el que nos quedamos parados que sería el centro. Los chinos dan a cada una de estas direcciones - y también al centro - un número. He hecho un pequeño esquema para que veáis esto mejor.

Each of the eight directions corresponds to a trigram. Trigrams are drawn by drawing lines that may or may not be cut in half. Each trigram is related to the number of the place where it belongs. Below is a sketch similar to the one above, but with the trigrams added.

A cada una de las ocho direcciones le corresponde un trigrama. Los trigramas se dibujan con líneas continuas y/o interrumpidas. A cada trigrama le corresponde el número del lugar en el que se encuentra. Debajo va un esquema como el de arriba pero con los trigramas añadidos.

What is all this good for? To help put each thing in its place. Branna will now help you find your personal trigram so that you will know which is your place. For things to go well with you, it is convenient that the door to your house be in the direction that corresponds to your trigram.

¿Para qué sirven todo esto? Para colocar cada cosa en su lugar. Branna ahora te ayudará a encontrar tu trigrama personal para que sepas cual es tu lugar. Para que te vaya todo bien, conviene que la puerta de tu casa esté en la dirección que corresponde a tu trigrama.

Finding your trigram is an easy but slightly sexist operation. It is done one way for men and another for women. Since I am a woman and I don´t want to be prejudiced, I will be courteous and show you first how it is done for men.

Encontrar tu trigrama es una operación sencilla pero un poco sexista. Se calcula de una manera para los hombres y de otra para las mujeres.Como soy una mujer y no quiero ser sexista, seré cortés y empezaré por explicaros como se hace para los hombres.

If you are a man, you find your trigram this way:

You have to know the year of your birth, for example, 1996..

Add the last two numbers of the year of your birth: 9+6=15

If the result has two cyphers, add the first to the second to get just one number: 1+5=6

Si el resultado es de dos cifras, suma la primera a la segunda para obtener sólo una: 1+5=6

Substract 6 from 10: 10-6=4

The final result is 4, the numbre of the trigram SUN.

El resultado final es 4, que es el número del trigrama SUN.

Therefore, SUN is your trigram, wood is your element, 4 is your number and the southeast is your direction and the direction of the door to your house if you are to be lucky.

Por lo tanto, SUN es tu trigrama, la madera tu símbolo y tu elemento, el 4 tu número y el sureste tu dirección y la dirección en la que debe estar la puerta de tu casa para que seas afortunado.

So KEN is your trigram, the mountain is your symbol, 8 is your number, the northeast your direction and the direction of the front door of your house if you are to be lucky.

If we take a door´s direction into account, it comes as no surprise that there are so many unhappy people.

Just one more detail.The Chinese year doesn´t start at the same time as the Western year. So if you were born in January or the beginning of February, to find your trigram you may have to work with the year before your western year of birth. For example, if you were born on January 5, 2003 you should do the operations with the year 2002.  

Sólo un detalle más. El año chino no empieza a la vez que el de occidente. Así que si naciste en enero o al principio de febrero, para encontrar tu trigrama puede que tengas que trabajar con el año anterior al de tu fecha de nacimiento occidental. Por ejemplo, si naciste el 5 de enero de 2003, debes hacer los cálculos con el año 2002.

I am not sure if what I am going to tell you about today, Valentine´s Day,  is one love story or two. What I do know is that this story or stories are sad.    

Lo que os voy a contar hoy, con motivo de San Valentín, no sé si es una historia de amor o si son dos. Lo que sí sé es que este cuento o cuentos son tristes.  

Echo was a nymph who spoke very well and who loved to gossip and always had interesting tales to tell. Whenever Zeus felt like flirting with the nymphs , he would order Echo to distract his wife with her chatter so that Hera would not see what he was at. Echo did not dare to disobey the king of the gods, so she did as she was told.


Eco era una ninfa que hablaba muy bien. Le encantaba chismorrear y siempre tenía cuentos muy interesantes que contar. Cuando a Zeus le apetecía flirtear con las ninfas, ordenaba a Eco que distrajese a su esposa Hera con su charla para que esta no se diese cuenta de lo que él estaba haciendo. La pobre Eco no se atrevía a desobedecer al rey de los dioses, así que hacía lo mandado.

Hera eventually discovered how her husband was cheating on her with Echo´s help. When Echo tried to excuse herself saying she had no choice but to obey Zeus, Hera accused her of having no mind of her own and fixed it so that Echo was never able to speak properly again. All poor Echo could do from that day on was repeat the last words of whatever others said.

Eventualmente Hera se enteró de que su marido la estaba engañando con la ayuda de Eco. Cuando Eco intentó excusarse diciendo que no tenía más remedio que obedecer a Zeus, Hera la acusó de no tener personalidad propia e hizo que Eco nunca volviese a hablar de forma normal. Desde ese día en adelante, lo único que la pobre Eco podía hacer era repetir las últimas palabras que pronunciaban otras personas.

Eco began to spend a lot of time alone, fleeing from the company of others and hiding in the mountains to avoid being made fun of. But one day her eyes lit on a young man who was roaming alone in the hills and she fell madly in love with him.

Eco empezó a pasar mucho tiempo sola, apartándose de los demás y escondiéndose en las montañas para evitar que se burlasen de ella. Pero un día se fijó en un joven que vagaba solo por aquellos parajes y se enamoró perdidamente de él.

The young man´s name was Narcissus. He was handsome even in excess. Eco was not the only person who desired him. But Narcissus rejected all those that courted him. As was to be expected, he also turned Echo down. Although her love was unrequited, brokenhearted Echo followed Narcissus everywhere about. That is how she got to witness the sad end that befell this youth.

El joven se llamaba Narciso. Era guapo hasta en exceso. Eco no era la única que le deseaba. Pero Narciso daba calabazas a todos los que le pretendían. Como era de esperar, también pasó de Eco. A pesar de que su amor no era correspondido, Eco, con el corazón roto, seguía a Narciso por todas partes. Por eso fue testigo del triste fin de este hermosísimo muchacho.

One day Naricssus, who had no idea what a mirror was, saw for the first time his own reflection in a pond. He fell in love with himself immediately. But the poor thing believed that the image he was seeing was that of someone who lived at the bottom of the pond. He dove into the water hoping to reach the being he loved and drowned trying to find himself.

Un día Narciso, que no tenía ni idea de lo que era un espejo, vió por primera vez su reflejo en un estanque. Inmediatamente quedó prendado de si mismo. Pero el pobre creía que la imagen que veía era la de alguien que vivía en el fondo del estanque. Se lanzó al agua para poder estar con el ser que amaba y se ahogó en el intento de encontrarse a si mismo.

The mountain nymphs drew his lifeless body out of the pond and buried it under the green grass. A lovely flower the like of which no one had seen before grew on the spot where they had buried the youth and the nymphs called it narcissus after the dead boy.

Las ninfas sacaron su cuerpo sin vida del estanque y lo enterraron bajo la hierba verde. Una hermosa flor cuyo igual nadie había visto antes creció en el lugar en el que habían sepultado al joven y las ninfas dieron  a esta el nombre de narciso en recuerdo del difunto muchacho.

Nobody ever saw poor Echo again, though it is still posible to hear her voice, especially if you are in caves or in the mountains.

Nadie volvió a ver a la pobre Eco, aunque todavía hoy es posible oírla, sobre todo si estás en cuevas o en las montañas.

Echoes occur because sound bounces.
For a sound to have an echo, it has to bounce off something with a smooth surface that is at least 75 metres away.
It has to hit another smooth surface on its way back to you.
All other sounds in the surroundings must be absorbed by things such as snow or a few trees or you won´t hear an echo.

Here I am right outside the office of the Masters of Feng Shui with whom I have a free session.. I´m going to pick these people up and take them to study my house. Feng Shui is the art of putting things in the right place. In theory, if everything is in its place, harmony will reign and all will go well. So, if you decorate your home according to the rules of Feng Shui, all will turn out right for you. This sounds very reasonable to me. If there is something I am a fan of, it is peace and harmony. So here I am, hoping for the best.

Aquí estoy justo frente al gabinete de los maestros del Feng Shui. Voy a recoger a estos señores y llevarles a estudiar mi casa. El Feng Shui es el arte de poner cada cosa en su lugar. Oriental fairies like to take the shape of animals. Bad ones almost always disguise themselves as foxes. On February 3 we celebrated the Chinese New Year. The year of the hare has started and my grandfather always takes the shape of the animal of the year. That way, he is always in touch with the times.
