Today I will review used to, be used to and get used to. I'm used to studying, but ...will I ever get used to this and think of it as easy?

Hoy voy a repasar solía, estar acostumbrado y llegar a acostumbrarse. Estoy acostumbrado a estudiar, pero...¿me acostumbraré a todo esto y llegaré a verlo como fácil?

USED TO + INFINITIVO

Que yo sepa, used to + infinitivo tiene por lo menos dos usos.

Se utiliza used to para algo que ocurría de forma habitual en el pasado pero que ahora ya no ocurre. Es como “solía.”

She used to smoke, but now she doesn’t.

Ella solía fumar pero ya no fuma.

I used to eat meat but now I only eat fruits and vegetables.

Yo solía comer carne pero ahora sólo como frutas y verduras.

También se utiliza used to para hablar de algo que ha dejado de existir o de ser lo que era. Sí, ya sé que parece lo mismo.

That used to be my school. Now I go to another that is closer to my home.

Ese era mi colegio. Ahora voy a otro que está más cerca de mi casa.

There used to be a park in that area but now it is a shopping center.

Había un parque en esa zona pero ahora es un centro comercial.

Lots of bears used to live in those hills but now they are practically extinct.

Muchos osos vivían en esas colinas pero ahora casi se han extinguido.

He used to be a famous actor but now he is an unknown hermit.

Era un actor muy famoso pero ahora es un ermitaño desconocido.

BE USED TO

Se utiliza para cosas a las que uno está acostumbrado o no, cosas que se ven como algo corriente o como lo normal.

Puede ir seguido de gerundio:

I am used to sleeping with the lights on.

Yo estoy acostumbrado a dormir con las luces encendidas.

She is used to walking to the office though it is far away.

Está acostumbrada a caminar a la oficina aunque está muy lejos.

Sandra’s parents are rich. She is used to living well.

Los padres de Sandra son ricos. Ella está acostumbrada a vivir bien.

Y puede ir seguido de un sustantivo:

Pancho is used to spicy food. He is Mexican.

Pancho está acostumbrado a la comida picante. Es mejicano.

Sam is from Alaska. He is used to the cold.

Sam es de Alaska. Está acostumbrado al frío.

GET USED TO

Esto es algo así como llegar a acostumbrarse. Puede ir con gerundio o sustantivo.

At first it felt strange, but I soon got used to working at night.

Al principio me parecía raro, pero pronto me acostumbré a trabajar de noche.

We can’t get used to the noise the air conditioner makes.

Nosotros no nos podemos acostumbrar al ruido que mete el aire acondicionado.

Lydia will never get used to waking up early.

Lydia jamás se acostumbrará a despertarse temprano.

Everything is always, always grey. It isn’t even white even in winter. There ___________ (be) a little tree out there, but somebody cut it down. I don’t know why. Maybe they couldn’t ____________ (see) something that wasn’t made of cement or metal out there. Also, I’m not ___________ traffic jams. I hate to take my car to work because of them. Yo solía ser feliz pero ahora me encuentro fatal. Me mudé a Madrid hace un año y simplemente no me puedo acostumbrar a  vivir en una ciudad tan grande. Yo vivía en una granja y ojalá siguiese ahí. Solía despertarme al alba rosada escuchando el canto de un gallo y ahora me despierto en la oscuridad oyendo el despertador chillón de mi vecino. Odio vivir en este apartamento canijo. Solía mirar por la ventana y ver el sol, la luna y las estrellas y un montón de hermosos árboles y hierba alta de color esmeralda. Ahora lo único que veo es cemento. Todo siempre, siempre es gris. No es ni blanco ni en invierno. Solía haber un árbol pequeñito ahí fuera, pero alguien lo ha cortado. No sé por qué. Tal vez no podían acostumbrarse a ver algo que no estuviese hecho de cemento o metal ahí fuera. Además, no estoy acostumbrado a los atascos. Odio ir en coche a trabajar por su culpa. Pero también odio el metro. No logro acostumbrarme a las muchedumbres que te encuentras allí. No estoy acostumbrado a que me empujen. No estoy acostumbrado a correr. Las escaleras mecánicas me dan miedo. Me siento perdido en los interminables pasillos. Jamás me acostumbraré a vivir en una gran ciudad.
