How time does go by! I can´t believe a whole year has passed since I first opened this section! If Janus hadn´t stopped by to close the old year and open the new one, I would hardly have noticed so much time had gone by. That´s why we Romans are famous for saying things like "Carpe Diem" or "Tempus Fugits."


¡Cómo vuela el tiempo! No me puedo creer que un año entero haya pasado desde que abrí esta sección por primera vez. Si Jano no hubiese pasado por aquí para cerrar el año viejo y abrir el nuevo, casi no me habría dado cuenta del tiempo que ha pasado. Por eso los romanos decíamos con frecuencia frases como "Carpe Diem" o "Tempus Fugit."

And that´s what I want to tell you about today, time. Do you remember old Cronus, the Titan who devoured his children? Well, he is the god of time. Yes, that´s what he looks like, an old man with a long gray beard, famous for his melancholy air. You can see him sitting under a tree brooding in my Mini Mythology VIII. He can´t bully the gods any longer. Zeus put an end to that. But he is still important to poor mortals who age and die.

Yesterday afternoon I visited Glorvina in Greenland, where she is busy watching icebergs melt. She asked me how my pupils were doing. I said I wanted them to learn how to interview someone famous in English.

She gave me a strange smile. When she does that, I know she´s up to something. And sure enough, the next day she told me my pupils were going to interview Mr. Eddy. She had made all the arrangements. That´s just like Glorvina. She makes arrangements without consulting you first.

Sonrió de un modo extraño. Cuando hace eso, se que anda en algo. Y, efectivamente, al día siguiente me dijo que mis alumnos iban a entrevistar al Sr. Eddy. Ella lo había organizado todo. Así es Glorvina. Lo organiza todo sin consultarte antes.

Glorvina said it was Mr. Eddy´s bicentennial birthday. It would be a shame not to honour him on this blog. Now, Mr. Eddy is very popular among the banshees. He is also a personal friend of my father, since both enjoy a good drink in a colourful bar. Mr. Eddy is really friendly and always interesting. And he´s undeniably good at what he does. But...Mr. Eddy gives me the creeps.

We don´t need a caterer. We´re not having a party. We need a sign of the zodiac. We couldn´t agree which calendar to distinguish our months by this year. Glorvina wanted the Celtic tree calendar, but the Celtic year began in November. Fergus wanted the Republican Calendar. Michael voted for the Aztec calendar. And so on. We finally agreed to use the signs of the zodiac this year and you are one of them. It´s because it´s astronomy year and you have a bit to do with that.

Ok. Well, my name is Ganymede and I´m cupbearer at Olympus. That means I´m a sort of bartender. I serve the drinks during the banquets of the gods. The drink they like best is called "nectar." I used to be mortal, but I was so goodlooking Zeus made me immortal. He changed himself into an eagle and carried me up to Olympus. I also work as part of the zodiac from 20 January to 18 February, give or take a day. That´s it, I guess. Ah, and I love to party but I hate fights, so I suppose that´s why the Age of Aquarius is supposed to be a peaceful period.

Vale. Bueno, pues me llamo Ganímedes y soy copero en el Olimpo. Eso quiere decir que soy una especie de barman. Sirvo las bebidas durante los banquetes de los dioses. La bebida que más gusta se llama "néctar." Yo era mortal, pero era tan guapo que Zeus me hizo inmortal. Se convirtió en un águila y me llevó volando hasta el Olimpo. También trabajo como parte del zodiaco del 20 de enero al 18 de febrero, más o menos. Eso es todo, supongo. Ah, y me encantan las fiestas pero odio las peleas, y supongo que por eso la Era de Acuario se considera un período de paz.

Searching / Buscando

On the eve of the Epiphany I left one of my shoes on the windowsill for the Magi to put gifts in - or coal. It was the shoe I had lost and that my cousins Fiona and Branna had retrieved from the Goblin Men. I got to thinking where the other shoe might be, and how I had to find it so it wouldn´t fall into the wrong hands. So, on the afternoon of the sixth of January I went out to look in an almond tree field near the cottage of some friends of mine.

La vispera de Reyes dejé uno de mis zapatos en la ventana para que los magos me echasen regalos - o carbón. Era el zapato que había perdido y que mis primas Fiona y Branna recuperaron arrebatandoselo a los Goblins. Empecé a preguntarme donde podría estar mi otro zapato y a preocuparme pensando que tenía que recuperarlo antes de que cayese en malas manos. Así que tarde por la tarde del día seis de Enero salí a buscarlo en un almendral que hay cerca de la casita de unos amigos.

The moon was already in the sky.

La luna ya estaba en el cielo.
