How time does go by! I can´t believe a whole year has passed since I first opened this section! If Janus hadn´t stopped by to close the old year and open the new one, I would hardly have noticed so much time had gone by. That´s why we Romans are famous for saying things like "Carpe Diem" or "Tempus Fugits."


¡Cómo vuela el tiempo! No me puedo creer que un año entero haya pasado desde que abrí esta sección por primera vez. Si Jano no hubiese pasado por aquí para cerrar el año viejo y abrir el nuevo, casi no me habría dado cuenta del tiempo que ha pasado. Por eso los romanos decíamos con frecuencia frases como "Carpe Diem" o "Tempus Fugit."

And that´s what I want to tell you about today, time. Do you remember old Cronus, the Titan who devoured his children? Well, he is the god of time. Yes, that´s what he looks like, an old man with a long gray beard, famous for his melancholy air. You can see him sitting under a tree brooding in my Mini Mythology VIII. He can´t bully the gods any longer. Zeus put an end to that. But he is still important to poor mortals who age and die.

Y de eso quiero hablar hoy, del tiempo. ¿Os acordáis del viejo Crono, el Titán que devoraba a sus hijos? Pues es el dios del tiempo. Sí, ése es el aspecto que tiene, un viejo de barba larga y gris famoso por su aire melancólico. Puedes verle en mi Mini Mitología VIII. Ya no puede acosar a los dioses. Zeus acabó con eso. Pero todavía es importante para los pobres mortales que envejecen y mueren.




The Horai, or Hours of Day, have a more cheerful aspect. They fly by very quickly but they return the next day. They are twelve, and their names are:

Las Horai, es decir, las Horas del Día, tienen un aspecto más alegre. Pasan volando pero vuelven al día siguiente. Son doce, y sus nombres son:

Auge, or First Light / La Primera Luz.
Anatole, or Dawn / El Amanecer.
Mousika, or Morning Hour of Music / La Hora de la Música.
Gymnastica, Morning Hour of Gymnastics / La Hora de la Gimnasia.
Nymphe, Morning Hour of Bath / La Hora del Baño.
Messembria, Noon Lunch Hour / La Hora del Almuerzo, el Mediodía.
Sponde, Hour of Libations and Offerings / Hora de las libaciones y ofrendas.
Elete and Acte, the Afternoon Hours / Las horas de la tarde.
Hesperis, the Evening Hour / El Atardecer.
Dysis, Sunset / El Ocaso o la puesta del Sol.
Arktos, or Bear, the Last Light, the shy twelfth hour who is named after a constellation in the night sky / Osa, la Última Luz, que es muy tímida y lleva el nombre de una constelación del cielo nocturno.
