Gemini / Géminis

Hi! We´re the new sign of the mini zodiac. We´re the celestial twins Castor and Pollux. Pollux´s Greek name is Polydeukes, but the Roman name Pollux is shorter and easier. You would think we are identical, but there was one small but important difference. One of us was mortal and the other immortal, because our mother was mortal and our father immortal.

¡Hola!

We were so close that we couldn´t take being separated by death. We asked our father, Zeus, the king of the gods, to let one of us be alive and the other dead on alternate days. But that didn´t work out because we couldn´t do anything together. So we made a second deal and got a place for ourselves among the stars. In exchange, we have to act as guides for sailors, who consider us their favorite demigods. You don´t know what a demigod is? It´s a minor god, like half a god. Instead of one of us being a full god, we´re both half gods. It´s not a bad deal. We´re happy enough up here together.

If you want to know why we are riding horses, it´s because we are excellent horsemen. We love sports and are also especially good at boxing.

The lady in the picture below is our mother, Leda. Zeus gave her four children that broke out of one big egg. Zeus wants us to say that he is in the picture too, in the backgroud, pretending to be a swan.

Aside from us, the other two children were girls. Nauta will probably tell you one day about our sisters Helen and Clytemnestra. So, you see, most people think we are twins, but we´re really cuadruplets.

In our constellation, there are two bright stars that light up our heads. Alpha Geminorum lights up Castor´s head and Beta Geminorum Pollux´s head.

Also in our constellation is the Eskimo Nebula, which is so called because people say that it looks like a face surrounded by an Eskimo hood. Other people call it the Clownface Nebula because they say it looks more like the face of a clown than like the face of an Eskimo. What do you think?

The Tale of Genji Illustrated / La Historia de Genji Ilustrada

Today I have visited a beautiful, beautiful site. It illustrates "The Tale of Genji," and has the same name as the novel. Remember Lady Murasaki, the purple lady who wrote the world´s first novel? Visit it yourself by clicking on the name above. If you´ve read the novel, you will be delighted to see all the lovely photos. If you haven´t, you should, but you will enjoy the pictures anyway. Genji´s story begins with the silent waterfall...

Hoy he visitado una página bellísima, bellísima.

Magpie´s Garage Sale II - On the way to Magpie´s Nest / El rastrillo de Uracca II - Camino del nido de Urraca

Alpin

The speckled hen bird sat pretty, high up on the green lemon tree!

Moth

With her beak she cuts off the flowers! With her beak she cuts off the leaves!

¡Con el pico corta la hoja! ¡Con el pico corta la flor!

Michael Toora

Do you have to sing that just now? I´d rather you didn´t sing bird songs. We´re two minutes from Magpie´s nest.

Harry Belafonte

Yellow bird, up high in banana tree!
Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.

Pájaro amarillo en lo alto del banano,
Pájaro amarillo, estás solito como yo.

Michael

Oh! And I´ll bet he is coming to the garage sale too.

¡Vaya!

Gilbert and Sullivan

On a tree by a river a little tom-tit
Sang "Willow, tit-willow, tit-willow!"

Lady Murasaki

To the plum tree branch the warbler comes, to sing all spring long...hee, hee, hee. Get up or we won´t make it in time.

Michael Toora

This is going to be one of those days... when I feel I may be a spoilsport.

Alpin

Hey, misters! I know one about the magpie.
¡Eh, señores! Yo me sé una sobre la urraca.

One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for a wedding
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Eight´s a wish
Nine´s a kiss
Ten is a bird you must not miss
MAGPIE!

Una es desgracia
Dos son alegría
Tres son un crío
Cuatro una cría
Cinco una boda
Seis mucho dinero
Siete un secreto para el mundo entero
Ocho son deseos
Nueve son besos
Diez son unos pájaros algo aviesos
¡URRACA!

Magpie´s Garage Sale I / El rastrillo de Urraca I

Alpin

My mum wants to know if you can look after me this afternoon.

Michael

No, I´m sorry but I can´t. Moth is going to take me to a garage sale. She says I might find my shoe there. Where is your mum?

Alpin

My mum and dad are on their way to a romantic dinner in Mauritius. I guess you´ll have to take me to the garage sale. What will you buy me there?

¿Qué me vas a comprar allí?

Michael

Nothing, if I can help it. Do you know what a garage sale is?

Alpin

A place where you can buy me things.

Un lugar donde puedes comprarme cosas.

Michael

Once or twice a year, usually in the spring, people clean out their houses and try to get rid of things they no longer want or need. They put all their junk out in their garden, usually in front of their garage and try to sell it to anyone who might find it interesting.

Alpin

People pay for junk? It´s not free?

¿La gente paga por basura? ¿No es gratis?

Michael

What is junk for me might be a treasure for you. In truth, what I´m trying to do at this garage sale is find my lost shoe.

Alpin

You think your lost shoe is in someone´s garage?

Michael

Well, this isn´t just anyone´s garage sale. This is the fairy Magpie´s annual garage sale. Once a year, Magpie cleans out her nest and decides to discard an unbelievable amount of stuff she has been hoarding. Most of it perfectly good too. She does it to have room for new stuff.

Alpin

I thinkI know who that Magpie is. Why do you call her "the fairy Magpie?" Everyone says she´s more like a witch. She´s also rumoured to be a bit of a thief. A shady character, this Magpie.

Michael

Look here, Alpin, I´d rather you didn´t say mean things about Magpie just now that I require her services. If you don´t promise to be discreet, I won´t take you with me.

Alpin

My lips will be sealed. Does Magpie offer buyers refreshments?

Mis labios estarán sellados. ¿Urraca invita a los compradores a refrescos?

Class Cabinet / El armario del aula

Elisa of 4B describes the cabinet in our English classroom in this composition.

The cabinet in the English classroom is vanilla coloured and is bordered by a green band. These two colours match with those of the classroom because its walls are bright yellow and the chairs and the desks are green. It is made of several materials such as wood and plastic. It is rectangular and its shape reminds me of a box of matches. It is not very tall, so you can accede to it easily and it does not occupy too much space. It is very symmetrical because it has two doors of the same size with two handles of a silver coloured metal. It has a lock of the same material as the handles so it can only be opened by the teacher who has the key. It is not a luxury cabinet, but it serves to keep many things because it has several shelves and since it is made of opaque materials you can´t see what is inside. Also, on top you can leave things without their falling off because the wings are higher than those of most cabinet tops. In conclusion it is a cabinet that fulfuills its function very well: not to decorate, but to store.

Elisa has mentioned: colour, size, shape, materials, value, purpose and owner of the article described as well as other details.

Doña Matilde

Here is a composition about an old photograph by Vicky Gillman-Pabón.

My great-grandmother Matilde de Olmos - second from the left way behind - was from a town in Burgos, which is in Castille. She moved to Manila when she married, because her husband´s family had settled there when it was the capital of a Spanish province. She learned how to sew from Jean Patou in Paris and became a high society dressmaker in Manila. She also taught others how to sew and in the picture she is with a group of her pupils. Some of them stayed to work with her and others opened their own businesses. In the picture, many are wearing typical Filipino clothes they have made for themselves. They all look very solemn. If the picture had been taken today, two or three people would be sticking their tongues out, and others would be holding two fingers behind the heads of those that are standing up front. Practically everyone would be leaning sideways. The little girl in the picture is my grandmother, Blanca, who lives with us in Ciudad Real today.
