"Hi, Mum and Dad! In case you are wondering where and how I am, I'm fine and the sea is great for my allergy but I've been in a couple of predicaments. When Alpin and I swam out of the drain of his pool pursued by Curmudgeon Finn, we surfaced on the exact spot in the Pacific where Michael Toora was celebrating his birthday. We crashed his party and Alpin swallowed the birthday cake whole in one gulp. Then he began to holler that Michael didn't know how to treat his guests and that he was dying of hunger. He fainted, or pretended to faint, from hunger and we had to swim to the nearest island dragging him along with us. Once ashore, Alpin revived somewhat and lying on his back in the sand he ordered his new bodyguard, Mr. Finn, to gather food for him.

"¡Hola, Mamá y Papá! Por si os estabais preguntando dónde y cómo estoy, pues estoy bien y el mar es estupendo para mi alergia, pero he pasado por un par de aprietos. Cuando Alpin y yo salimos nadando por el desagüe de la piscina de éste perseguidos por el Sr. Cascarrabias Finn, nos encontramos en el mismísimo lugar del Pacífico en el que Michael Toora estaba celebrando su cumpleaños. Nos colamos en su fiesta y Alpin engulló la tarta de cumpleaños entera de un bocado. Entonces empezó a chillar que Michael no sabía convidar a sus invitados y que estaba muriéndose de hambre. Se desmayó, o fingió caer desfallecido y tuvimos que arrastrarle a nado hasta la isla más cercana. Una vez en tierra, Alpin revivió un poco y tumbado de espaldas en la arena ordenó a su nuevo guardaespaldas, el Sr. Finn, que recolectase comida para él.

"Mr. Finn is extraordinarily athletic for his age and he scooted up the tallest coconut trees quite effortlessly and swung from one to the other knocking down coconuts in a manner that would surely be the envy of the very natives.

"El Sr. Finn es extraordinariamente atlético para su edad y se encaramó a los cocoteros más altos sin apenas esfuerzo y voló de unos a otros derribando cocos con un estilo que seguro que sería la envidia hasta de los nativos.

The Lambeth Walk / El Andar de Lambeth

Here's a song about London's Lambeth street from a musical about Cockneys called "Me and My Girl." It first run in 1937 and it was said that while dictators raged and statesmen talked, all Europe danced - to the Lambeth Walk!

More than 135 years ago a thirteen year old boy named Henry Croft left the orphanage in which he had been brought up and began to earn a living as a sweeper in a market. There he made friends with the costermongers, apple sellers with a lot of personality. The clothes the costermongers wore were peculiar. They were in the habit of sewing pearl buttons to their trousers, vests, jackets and caps to distinguish themselves from other workers. Aside from being picturesque, these apple vendors were very supportive and looked after mates who were in trouble. Henry also wanted to do something to help others and began to raise funds for the children of his old orphanage. He realized that to raise money he had to attract attention and he started by changing his look. He sewed all the pearl buttons he found while sweeping to his clothes and people began to call him the Pearly King. By the time Harry died, he had raised more than five thousand pounds for different institutions, the equivalent of two hundred thousand of today´s pounds. He had become a famous person and many families from his neighborhood had followed his example, filling their clothes with buttons (some of these suits have more than ten thousand buttons and weigh about thirty kilos) and collaborating with orphanages, hospitals and churches. These persons called themselves pearly kings and queens. Parents are succeeded by their children, who continue their supportive labor and a tradition that the Cockneys, neighbors of London's East End, are very proud of.

Hace más de 135 años un niño de 13 años llamado Henry Croft dejó el orfelinato en el que se había criado y empezó a ganarse la vida como barrendero en un mercado. Allí se hizo amigo de los costermongers, los vendedores de manzanas, un gremio con personalidad propia. El atuendo de los costermongers era muy particular. Acostumbraban a coser botones de nácar a sus pantalones, chalecos, chaquetas y gorras para diferenciarse de otros trabajadores. Además de pintorescos, estos vendedores de manzanas eran muy solidarios y cuidaban de los compañeros que tenían problemas. Henry también quiso hacer algo para ayudar a los demás y empezó a recaudar dinero para los niños de su antiguo orfelinato. Se dio cuenta de que para reunir dinero había que saber llamar la atención, y empezó por modificar su atuendo. Cosió a su ropa los botones de nácar que encontraba al barrer y la gente empezó a llamarle el Rey Perlito. Cuando Harry murió, había logrado reunir más de cinco mil libras para distintas instituciones, el equivalente de doscientas mil libras de las de hoy. Se había convertido en un personaje popular y muchas familias de su barrio habían seguido su ejemplo cubriendo sus ropas con botones (a veces hasta más de diez mil, algunos de estos trajes pesan hasta treinta kilos) y colaborando con orfelinatos, hospitales e iglesias. Estas personas se hacían llamar reyes perlitos y reinas perlitas. Los padres son sucedidos por sus hijos, que continúan su labor solidaria y una tradición de la que están muy orgullosos los Cockneys, vecinos del East End de Londres.
