At least one of the Fay can draw benefit from the past month´s sad encounter with mortals, genuinely convinced that every cloud has a silver lining. 

Del triste encuentro que hubo el mes pasado con los mortales, un hada al menos intenta sacar provecho, convencida de que no hay mal que por bien no venga.

Prime Minister Binky would have liked to announce that he disposed of the money he needed to finance his school in the auditorium of the Royal Library of St. Job, during a great banquet, somewhere between the glamour of the Oscars and the fund-raising potential of the type of party given to raise funds for museums of contemporary art.

Al Primer Ministro Binky le hubiese gustado anunciar que había conseguido fondos para su escuela en un gran banquete celebrado en el auditorio de la Real Biblioteca del Santo Job. Tenía pensado un evento con todo el glamur de los Óscares y todo el potencial para conseguir todavía más dinero para la causa que tienen los actos celebrados con vistas a recaudar fondos para  Museos de Arte Contemporáneo.

But he took too long to organize his fête and Queen Titania refused to participate in an event that should have been held during a month with an “r” in it and not in the middle of a heat wave.

Pero tardó demasiado en organizar el sarao y la Reina Titania se negó a hacer acto de presencia en un evento que se tendría que haber celebrado en un mes con “r” y no durante una ola de calor.

So the Light of Understanding Award will first be granted during the Lush Leaf Barbecue, held annually by a club of  trees that take pride in being easy-going and give a lot of shade in summer and a party during the first week of July.

     

Así que la primera entrega del Premio Luz del Entendimiento se va a hacer durante la barbacoa anual de los Frondosos, unos árboles de aire campechano que siempre dan muchísima sombra en verano y una gran barbacoa a principios de julio.

And the tiny tragedy that has so recently occurred is but one more example of the urgent need for a school that will teach humans and fairies to understand each other so that we can advance together in the path towards much desired peace between our peoples.

Y esta diminuta tragedia ocurrida tan recientemente no es más que otro ejemplo de la enorme necesidad de una escuela que nos permita aprender a entendernos a humanos y hadas para que juntos podamos trabajar por la tan ansiada paz.

Now that you ask, I realize that it must be that kid over there that she is hanging out with. Jeepers! Our little girl must be one of those fairies that are born with a mate. That is why she has paid no attention whatsoever to any of us. That kind of fairy is only interested in his or her better half.

 

Ahora que lo preguntas, me doy cuenta de que debe ser ese crío de ahí que la está rondando. ¡Jolín! Nuestra hija es una de esas hadas que nacen con pareja. Por eso no nos dirigía la palabra. A esa clase de hadas no les interesa nadie más que su media naranja.

And you can´t see it, but our poor little princess has a lump the size of a golf ball under this straw helmet hat meant to conceal it. This is due to a sordid misunderstanding with the mortals.

Y ya sé que ustedes no lo ven, pero nuestra pobre princesita tiene un chichón de padre y muy señor mío debajo de este floripondio cuyo propósito es disimularlo, y todo debido a un sórdido malentendido con los mortales.

But thanks to our very young benefactor, this little knight in sweltering...erh...shining  armour, no evil will ever distress this defenseless little damsel ever again because soon the light of understanding will shine on fairies and humans alike thanks to this generous boy´s magnificent donation and therefore I award him this golden lantern, symbol of blah, blah, blah.

Pero gracias a nuestro jovencísimo benefactor, a este caballerito de asfixiante..eh...radiante armadura, nada malo le volverá a suceder a esta indefensa damiselita, porque pronto se hará la luz del entendimiento entre hadas y mortales gracias a la espectacular donación hecha por este generosísimo niño al que ahora, en agradecimiento, hago entrega de esta linterna de oro macizo símbolo de blah, blah, blah.

Esto está hecho, nena. A partir de ahora tú y tu hijo sois unos bienhechores, unos hadáfilos y unos filántropos. Con el dinero del cafre ese que se cargo tu ya cuestionable reputación te he comprado respetabilidad y un lugar en la buena sociedad. ¡Y menudo lugar! No sólo ha creado el Primer Ministro un galardón para otorgarle. La misma reina va a nombrar caballero de la Orden del Corchetito a tu niño en agradecimiento. Y eso aunque todavía no ha cumplido un año.  Nadie se atreverá a despreciarte a partir de ahora.

Weeeell! It looks like we now owe the gangster´s mole and their little biscuit with the questionable but unquestionably protected geographical indication status a big favor. Well, we didn´t ask for no favors, but it looks like we´ll have to eat humble cookie.

Creo que es peor que eso. Hemos emparentado con los restos del pirata Barbamocos. Valentina se empeñará en ser la Sra. de Barbamoquitos en cuanto cumpla los siete años.

Miss Fiona found that little cookie when cleaning the oven that turned Salty Boogerbeard into a gingerbread man.

Esa galletita se la encontró la Señorita Fiona al limpiar el interior del horno que convirtió en hombrecillo de pan de jengibre a Saladito Barbamocos.

The oven had no power to destroy what little good there was in that delinquent. It only had power to punish the evil. So Salty´s good side survives in this infant cookie that is as good as gold.

El horno no tenía poder para acabar con lo bueno que había en ese delincuente. Sólo para castigar lo malo. Así que el lado bueno del cafre sobrevive en ese bebé galleta que es más buena que el pan.

Yes, it is pure kindness. Since Salty had so little good in him, the result is a very little child. But love can grow, so I imagine the cookie will too.

Sí, es todo bondad. Como era tan poquito lo que tenía de bueno el tal Saladito,  pues salió un niño muy pequeñito. Pero el amor es capaz de crecer, así que me imagino que la galleta lo hará también.

And why is it – he – named after a pesticide? Don´t tell me that it is because his mother is a blonde and doesn´t know how to write the name of the Egyptian god of intelligence correctly. It so happens I am occasionally a natural blonde myself.

¿Y por qué tiene la… el niño… nombre de pesticida? No me digáis que es porque su madre es rubia y no sabe escribir bien el nombre del dios Egipcio. ¡Qué yo también soy rubia natural en ocasiones!

A few centuries ago my mum was wearing a dress with a breathtaking neckline. It was held in place by a row of hooks and eyes that went from her waist to the hem of the said neckline. The uppermost of these burst open and…well, a gentleman promptly offered her his cape so she could cover up.  To reward him for his considerate gesture, Mum created the Order of the Knights of the Hook and Eye and made him its first and foremost member. Members get a medal shaped like a hook and eye that they can wear as a bowtie. Look, Mr. Binky is wearing one.

 

Hace unos pocos siglos mi madre llevaba un vestido con un escote descomunal. Lo sujetaban unos corchetes que iban de la cintura al escote. El de más arriba estalló, y… bueno, un señor la prestó su capa para que se cubriese. Mamá creo la Orden del Corchete para premiar el gesto tan considerado de este señor, al que nombró  primer caballero de la misma. Te dan una medalla de oro con forma de corchete que pueden llevar como pajarita los miembros de la orden. Mira. El Sr. Binky lleva una.
