Dublin´s haunting fishmonger / La hechizante pescadera de Dublín

Here is a song we will sing on the 13th of June. We are a little early publishing it, but don´t leave for tomorrow what you can do today.

 Molly Malone  / Mari Malone

Molly Malone walked the streets of Dublin pushing a wheelbarrow full of fish for sale, following the footsteps of her father and mother who were also fishmongers. She was a strangely lovely and ethereal sight, so much so that when she died of a fever people still saw her wandering the city streets pushing her cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh! This Irish folksong is a somewhat phantasmagorical version of "From Santurce to Bilbao," a song in Spanish about lusty sardine-selling fishwives. Molly´s disturbing melody has been heard in many a scary movie.

Where the girls are so pretty, / Donde las chicas son tan guapas
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone, / Me fijé por primera vez en la dulce Mari Malone
As she wheeled her wheel-barrow, / Mientras paseaba su carro
Through streets broad and narrow, / Por calles anchas y angostas
Crying  “Crying cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!" / Pregonando “¡Berberechos y mejillones!  ¡Vivitos y coleando!”
"Alive, alive, oh, / “¡Vivos y coleando!”
Alive, alive, oh," / “¡Vivos y coleando!”
Crying "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh" / Pregonando “¡Berberechos y mejillones! ¡Vivitos y coleando!”
She was a fishmonger, / Era una pescadera
But sure 'twas no wonder, / Pero no es nada extraño

For so were her father and mother before,/ Porque lo fueron su padre y su madre también,
And they each wheeled their barrows, / Y cada uno paseaba su carro
Through streets broad and narrow, / Por calles anchas y angostas
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!" / Pregonando “¡Berberechos y mejillones, vivitos y coleando!”
She died of a fever, / Murió de una fiebre
And none could relieve her, / Y nadie pudo socorrerla
And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone.
But her ghost wheels her barrow, / Pero su alma pasea su carro
Through streets broad and narrow, / Por calles anchas y angostas
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!" / Pregonando “¡Berberechos y mejillones! ¡Vivitos y coleando!”

We found the image of  Miss Malone´s statue above in Images from the Internet. We translated the song as best we could in a hurry. There is no time for anything nowadays.Maybe in the next life we will make this translation singable.
