The Bonnie Pretender / El pretendiente bonito

Bonnie Prince Charlie may have inspired the famous Scottish folk song featured in our post today. He spent all his life trying to win back the thrones of England and Scotland for his family, the Stuarts, who had been sent off to exile in Italy because they were Catholics. Although he failed in this endeavor, Charlie is admired by many, who consider him a very romantic hero.

He invaded Scotland more than once and on one occasion even managed to gain control of Edinburgh. But he is chiefly remembered for hiding here and there in his country and for not having been betrayed by anyone despite the 30,000 pounds promised to whoever gave information that would lead to his capture. That is a tidy sum today, so it was really big money in his day.

One time he even had to flee from Scotland disguised as the maid of a lady named Flora MacDonald, who took him in a rowboat to a ship that carried him to safety in France. In the picture above, the bonnie prince is saying thank you and goodbye to this brave lady.

My Bonnie lies over the ocean / Mi niño bonito está más alla del océano.
My Bonnie lies over the sea / Mi niño bonito está más alla del mar
My Bonnie lies over the ocean / Mi niño bonito está más alla del océano
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me. / O volved a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.

Bring back, bring back / Volved a traer, volved a traer
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me / Volved a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí, hasta mí
Bring back, bring back / Volved a traer, volved a traer
Bring back my Bonnie to me / Volved a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.

Last night as I lay on my pillow / Anoche, mientras yacía sobre mi almohada
Last night as I lay on my bed / Anoche mientras yacía sobre mi cama
Last night as I lay on my pillow / Anoche mientras yacía sobre mi cama
I dreamt that my Bonnie was there / Soñé que mi niño bonito estaba aquí

Oh blow the winds o'er the ocean / Oh, soplen los vientos sobre el océano
And blow the winds o'er the sea / Y soplen los vientos sobre el mar
Oh blow the winds o'er the ocean / O soplen los vientos sobre el océano
And bring back my Bonnie to me / Y vuelvan a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.

Bring back, bring back / Volved a traer, volved a traer
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me / Volved a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.
Bring back, bring back/ Volved a traer, volved a traer
Bring back my Bonnie to me / Volved a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.

The winds have blown over the ocean / Los vientos han soplado sobre el océano
The winds have blown over the sea / Los vientos han soplado sobre el mar
The winds have blown over the ocean / Los vientos han soplado sobre el océano
And brought back my Bonnie to me / Y han vuelto a traer a mi niño bonito hasta mí.
