Nauta´s Mini Mythology: Maia and the Pleiades / Mini Mitología de Nauta: Maya y las Pléyades

Flaccus Intrepidus Nauta

The month of May owes its name to Maia, an outstandingly beautiful and intelligent goddess who prefers to live in prudent seclusion in a cave in Arcadia, where she studies magic and botany and from which she rarely emerges except to help plants grow.

One reason why Maia might be such a recluse is that she is often visited by Zeus, the king of the gods. He comes at midnight, when his wife Hera is fast asleep. Maia has a son by Zeus. He is clever Hermes, also known to us Romans as Mercury, and I will tell you all about him next month. He has already been seen on this blog, though. Click on the Apple of Discord to read about that. He is the one carrying the apple on a plate.

Maia has six sisters. All seven are mountain nymphs and are known collectively as the seven Pleiades. The sisters like to meet up in the sky, where they form their own constellation. It looks like a bunch of grapes when these violet-haired ladies all gather together. On summer nights you can see them pretty well up in the firmament, except for one who prefers not to attract attention for personal reasons and shines much less brightly.

I once visited the Pleiades. I once took an astral trip on the back of Clavileño, a magic wooden horse. Since I am a countryman, I like to call these sisters the seven little goats. They laughed and cavorted a lot when I was among them.
