Where have I been? I was making my way here in July on a drawing of the ship Argo when a wind blew me off it and the ship was lost in the wide sea. The illustrator rotundly refused to make a new drawing and for the present cannot be convinced to the contrary. So I have no choice but to make my appearance here today in the company of the Gorgons, three ladies who have good reason to be very illtempered. They wouldn´t wait for me to introduce them and insisted on walking into the post first, hoping in this manner to take you by surprise and perhaps turn you into stone.  

¿Qué dónde me había metido? Venía camino hacia aquí en julio montado en un dibujo de la nave Argo cuando un viento me tiró de la nave y ésta se perdió en la ancha mar. La ilustradora se negó en redondo a hacer otro dibujo del Argo y de momento no hay quien la convenza de lo contrario. Así que  hoy me toca aparecer aquí en compañía de las gorgonas, unas señoras con motivos para tener muy mal genio. No quisieron esperar a que yo las presentase e insistieron en pasar las primeras a esta entrada, probablemente con la intención de tomarles a ustedes por sorpresa y dejar a alguno de piedra.  

This is no joke. Of these three sea demons, whose names are Medusa, Sthenno and Euryale, the first has the power to turn to stone those who look straight into her eyes. Which is why our illustrator has taken the precaution to paint them with their eyes well shut. 

No es broma. De estos tres demonios marinos, cuyos nombres son Medusa, Esteno y Euríale, la primera tiene el poder de dejar a cualquiera que la mire a los ojos de piedra para siempre. Por eso nuestra ilustradora ha tomado la precaución de pintarlas a las tres con los ojitos bien cerrados.

What happens when the blood of a Gorgon is shed? Well, this blood petrifies and turns into coral. That, according to mythology, is how the corral reefs were formed. They are one of the wonders of this planet, although dangerous for those who sail the seas. 

¿Qué pasa cuando se derrama la sangre de una gorgona? Pues que dicha sangre también se petrifica, convirtiéndose en coral. Así, según la mitología, se fueron formando los arrecifes de coral que son una de las maravillas de este planeta, aunque peligrosos para quienes navegan los mares. 

We will have more to say about the Gorgons some other time, when we speak of a fellow called Perseus.Today I say goodbye with a warning. If you are lucky enough to be on holiday near the sea, keep away from the jellyfish. They are Medusa´s godchildren  and in Spanish they are named after her. Like their godmother, they don´t hesitate to harm those that come too close to them.  

Tendremos más que contar sobre las gorgonas en otra ocasión, cuando hablemos de un individuo llamado Perseo. Hoy me despido con un consejo. Si tenéis la suerte de estar veraneando junto al mar, mucho cuidado con las medusas. Son las ahijadas de la más famosa de las gorgonas y por eso llevan su nombre. Como su madrina, acostumbran a causar algún estrago cuando alguien se les acerca demasiado.
