The Nut Tree and the Spanish Sisters / El nogal y las hermanas españolas

Two Spanish sisters inspired a song that is still sung as a nursery rhyme by English-speaking  children today.

Dos hermanas españolas inspiraron una canción que todavía cantan hoy los niños de habla inglesa. 

Teenaged Catherine of Aragon married Arthur, the young prince of Wales, in England. He died soon after and Catherine married again, this time to her brother-in-law, Henry VIII. The song probably refers to her first marriage. 

La adolescente Catalina de Aragón se casó en Inglaterra con el joven Arturo, Príncipe de Gales. El novio murió al poco tiempo y Catalina volvió a casarse, esta vez con su cuñado, Enrique VIII. La canción probablemente se refiere a su primer matrimonio.

Joan of Castille visited England because of a shipwreck. Somebody must have seen this portrait of the young Spanish princess. That would explain the description of the King of Spain´s daughter - red dress, black hair - given by the song. Catherine was a redhead and we are not sure about Joan, but in this portrait her hair looks dark. 

Juana de Castilla visitó Inglaterra obligada por un naufragio. Alguien debió ver este retrato de la joven y de ahí el vestido rojo y el pelo negro de la hija del rey de España según la descripción que da la canción. Catalina era pelirroja, y no estamos seguros de que color era el pelo de Juana pero en este retrato parece oscuro.

Jet black was her hair, / Negro azabache su cabello,

And my golden pear. / Y mi nogal tan bello.

I said, “So fair a princess / "Princesa más hermosa

Never did I see, / Yo jamás vi,

I´ll give you all the fruit / Lo que dé mi nogal,

From my little nut tree. / Todo será para ti."

I danced over the water, / Bailé encima del agua,

I danced over the sea, / Bailé encima del mar,

And all the birds in the air / Y ningún ave del aire,

Couldn´t catch me. / Me pudo alcanzar.

Only jesters like me can truly understand the importance of the last four lines. The songwriter ran a risk writing this song, but no harm came of it. He didn't get wet, he didn't get caught. It was very ably written. Songs about the personal affairs of royalty were like that back then. A bit of double entendré to avoid being offensive was often necessary.

Sólo los que tengan alma de bufón como yo pueden entender la importancia de las últimas cuatro lineas. El autor de la canción corrió un riesgo al escribirla, pero escapó ileso. Ni se mojó, ni se dejó pillar. Estaba muy hábilmente escrita. En aquel entonces, así eran las canciones sobre los asuntos personales de la realeza. Un poco de doble sentido para no ofender era con frecuencia necesario.
