Don Quijote

To form the negative of the present simple, use don't + the base form of the verb, except for the third person singular. For the third person singular, use doesn´t + the base form of the verb. 

Para formar la negativa del presente simple en inglés, usa don’t + verbo en forma base para todas las personas menos la tercera singular. Para la tercera persona singular, usa doesn’t + verbo en forma base.

How to Form the Present Simple Affirmative / Cómo formar la afirmativa del presente simple en inglés

PARA FORMAR EL  PRESENT SIMPLE AFFIRMATIVE:
En principio, el verbo sólo cambia para la tercera persona singular. Se añade una s.                                                                                                 

I dance. / Yo bailo.                  We dance. / Nosotros bailamos.

You dance. / Tú bailas            You dance. / Vosotros bailais.  

He dances. / Él baila.               They dance. / Ellos bailan.

She dances. / Ella baila.          They dance. / Ellas bailan. 

It dances/ Lo neutro baila.      They dance. / Las cosas sin sexo bailan.

Esto último no lo hay en español. It es para las cosas, que en realidad no tienen sexo aunque en español algunas se consideran femeninas y otras masculinas. En inglés no se atribuye sexo a las cosas. En cuanto a los animales, si no se sabe cual es su sexo, también se usa it.

A veces, no basta con añadir sólo una s. Las reglas de ortografía piden algo más. Vamos a ver dos reglas. La primera es que hay que añadir es  si el verbo termina en sh, x, ch, z, ss, o.

Hello. I´m here to tell you how everything went after the Dark Man’s phone call. As you know, Darcy asked my Mum to see if I was still around, and she went to the window and saw I was and called out and I heard her.  I returned home to see what she wanted and she put me on the phone with Darcy. I didn’t want to tell him I had the check, because I didn’t trust him, but, of course, I had to because nobody can say no to the Dark Man.

Hola. Estoy aquí para contaros como fue todo después de la llamada del  Hombre Oscuro. Como sabeis, Darcy le pidió a mi madre que me llamase por la ventana y ella lo hizo y yo la oí. Volví a casa para ver que quería y ella me puso al teléfono con Darcy. Yo no quería contarle que tenía el cheque porque no me fiaba de él, pero no tuve más remedio porque nadie le puede decir que no al Hombre Oscuro.

He told me not to move from where I was and to close the doors and windows and draw the blinds and wait. He would hang up and come for the check immediately, which, he assured me would be safe with him. I did as he asked and  my Mum and I sat on the sofa and waited for Darcy and I explained to her what was happening and she got scared someone might arrive before Darcy and steal the check, so she put it in a heatproof  glass container and burnt it in there. She said she would show Darcy the ashes and ask him to ask her if she had really burnt the Magi´s blank check. He would believe her when she answered yes, because you can’t lie to the Dark Man if he asks you to tell the truth. All this took about seven minutes and Darcy arrived in eight, breaking a record.

Él me dijo que me quedase donde estaba y cerrase las puertas y ventanas y bajase las persianas. El vendría a por el cheque nada más colgar el teléfono. Me aseguró que el cheque estaría a salvo con él. Hice lo que me pidió y me senté en el sofá con mi madre a esperar y mientras esperábamos a Darcy le conté a Mamá lo que estaba pasando y ella se asustó y temiendo que alguien llegase antes que a Darcy y robase el cheque, lo metió en un tarro de cristal de ese que aguanta mucho calor y lo quemó ahí dentro. Dijo que le enseñaría las cenizas a Darcy y le pediría que la preguntase si era verdad que había quemado el cheque de los reyes. El la creería cuando dijese que sí porque nadie le puede mentir al Hombre Oscuro si pide que le digan la verdad. Todo esto llevó unos siete minutos y al octavo llegó Darcy rompiendo un record.

He immediately called the Three Wise Men, who were already mounting their camels, to tell them the check had been found and destroyed. They were very happy to hear that, because for the first time in their lives they had used a credit card to be able to ride out that night and they weren’t too happy about it. They were given a credit card because word had gotten around that Darcy himself was out there looking for the check and it was ten to one the Dark Man would find it. Ernest, Death’s Coachman, had told the Magi that as long as they had credit they could ride, but if they should ever have to make good an abusive blank check, the only ride they would go on would be in his carriage.

Llamó inmediatamente a los Magos de Oriente, que ya estaban montándose en sus camellos,  para decirles que el cheque había sido hallado y destruido. Se pusieron muy contentos porque por primera vez en la vida habían tenido que usar una tarjeta de crédito para poder salir esa noche y no estaban muy conformes con eso. Les concedieron la tarjeta de crédito porque el rumor de que Darcy estaba buscando el cheque se había extendido y las apuestas eran de diez a uno a que lo encontraba. Ernesto, el Cochero de la Muerte, les había dicho a los Magos que podían salir a repartir regalos mientras tuviesen crédito, pero si alguna vez se encontraban obligados a pagar un cheque que pasaba de estar en blanco a llevar una cifra leonina, no volverían a subirse a sus camellos. Sólo podrían montar en su carruaje.

The Wise Men wanted to know where the check had been all this time and Darcy told them all about me. They were so pleased with me that they promised to send me a King Cake with a very special little figure in it every single morning from this Epiphany on to Eternity. They said they would keep sending me one forever even if they were eventually forced to move away from the world of mortals.

Los Magos de Oriente querían saber dónde había estado el cheque todo este tiempo y Darcy les habló de mí. Estaban tan contentos conmigo que prometieron mandarme un roscón de Reyes con una figurita muy especial cada mañana desde este día de Reyes hasta la Eternidad. Dijeron que seguirían mandándola aunque algún día se viesen forzados a abandonar el mundo de los mortales.

I told my Mum that every morning would be the Epiphany for us from that day on, and that we would always have hot chocolate and King Cake for breakfast and that she would always find the little figure and be crowned queen and I would always find the bean because I could afford to provide the next cake since I was to have one free every day. Darcy wanted to reward me too for having made his job easy for him and I asked Darcy to ask my Mum to stay awake from eight in the morning till noon every day at least and she had to promise she would. So now I´m not scared she might just never wake up again one day, or turn into a little baby from so much resting.  

Le dije a mi madre que cada mañana sería la mañana de Reyes para nosotros desde ese día en adelante y que siempre tomaríamos chocolate caliente y roscón de reyes para desayunar y que ella siempre encontraría la figurita y sería coronada reina y a mí siempre me tocaría el haba porque podía permitirme proporcionar el siguiente roscón, ya que iba a recibir uno gratis a diario. Darcy también quería agradecerme el haberle puesto fácil lo de encontrar el cheque y yo le pedí que pidiese a mi madre que se despertase todas las mañanas a las ocho y permaneciese despierta hasta el mediodía por lo menos y ella tuvo que prometer que lo haría y tendrá que hacerlo. Así yo ya no tendré miedo de que algún día no vuelva a despertarse o de que se convierta en un bebé de tanto descansar.

Let´s face it. I’m not good at what I do. I have a handicap. I can only steal in places where there aren’t any knick-knacks. If I were to dig a tunnel to enter a bank, once I was in I would notice the trinkets on the desk of one of the employees, see one I love and forget everything else and flee from the spot with it in my pocket before someone could stop me and take it from me.

Admitámoslo. No soy muy bueno en lo que hago. Tengo un hándicap. Sólo puedo robar en sitios donde no haya ninguna maritata. Si hiciese un túnel para entrar en un banco, me distraerían unas figuritas en el escritorio de alguna de las empleadas, vería una que me encantaría y me olvidaría de todo lo demás y me largaría pitando de allí con ella en el bolsillo antes de que alguien me detuviese y me la quitase.

So it turns out I hit the jackpot this summer when I filched the leprechaun. And what the deuce can someone like me do with a prize like that? What a mess I’ve put my foot into with this kind of jackpot! Well, I’m small and insignificant and shorter than the hobbit who made it to the chasm where he had to throw the ring, so maybe I can get to the Magi without being noticed. I don’t know those people, but I don’t wish them any harm. And I want to return the check. Yes, I need to get there before they get robbed. Because I certainly haven’t robbed them.

Why, you look like my daughter instead of my mum. Sigh. Sometimes I think you sleep so much because you don’t want to look like me.

I have a lovely leprechaun ornament hanging right here on my bedside Christmas tree. Hmmm. I think it was this summer I got it. My son gave it to me. He always gives me cute little knickknacks because he knows I love them. Yes, he lives here, but no, he’s not at home now. He just left. Where did he go? Well, I´m not sure, but I think he went to get me a Twelfth Day of Christmas gift. He always has something for me when he returns home. When I last saw him he was walking towards the East. I think that if I got up and looked out the window I might still see him in the distance. Oh, no! Do I really have to get up?

Tengo un precioso adornito con forma de leprecán colgando del arbolito de navidad que hay en mi mesilla de noche. Hemmm. Creo que fue este verano que me lo dieron. Me lo dió mi hijo. Siempre me da figuritas monísimas porque sabe que me encantan. Sí, vive aquí, pero no. No está en casa ahora. Acaba de salir. ¿Qué a dónde ha ido? Pues no estoy segura. Creo que se habrá ido a por un regalo de reyes para mi. Siempre me trae algo cuando vuelve a casa. La útlima vez que le ví estaba caminando hacia oriente. Creo que si me levantase y mirase por la ventana todavía podría verle en la distancia. ¡Ay, no! ¿De veras tengo que levantarme?

And Mrs. di Lembo did get up, because Darcy had asked her to and she couldn’t say no. And she saw her son still was within shouting distance and he heard her when she called. And the Magi is going out tomorrow whether they get their check back in time or not because they have a credit card and they've put themselves in the hands of God.

Y la Sra. del Limbo se levantó porque Darcy le pidió que lo hiciese y no se podía negar. Y vió que su hijo todavía estaba al alcance de su voz, y le llamó, y él la oyó. Y los reyes magos van a salir recuperen el cheque o no a tiempo porque tienen una tarjeta de crédito y han pensado que sea lo que Dios quiera si nos endeudamos.

Still Searching / Todavía buscando

Today is the fourth of January and it is already dusk. The dark man is still phoning to see if he can find the person who took the little ornament shaped like a leprechaun that holds the Magi´s blank check within it. Thank heavens phone calls are free in the fairy world. He has already called half the numbers in the fairy phone book. And time after time he has a conversation similar to this one:

Al atardecer del cuatro de enero, el hombre oscuro sigue haciendo llamadas para intentar localizar a la persona que se llevo el adorno con forma de leprecán que contiene el cheque de los Reyes Magos. Menos mal que las llamadas telefónicas son gratis en el mundo de las hadas. Ya ha llamado a la mitad de los números que hay en la guía telefónica de las hadas. Y vez tras vez tiene una conversación muy parecida a esta:

"Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up. I’ll be with you in a second. If there is anyone eavesdropping, stop at once. Forget about what has just happened and go to sleep for the rest of the week. Hello? Yes, this is the Dark Man and this is no joke. I need to know if you or someone you know have a little ornament shaped like a leprechaun in your power? Blah, blah, blah. Ok, thank you. Goodbye and happy new year. Carry on with whatever you were doing and forget about this call. Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up, I’ll be with you in a second. Blah, blah, blah…"

"¿Hola? Habla Darcy, el hombre oscuro. Por favor no cuelgue. Estaré con usted en un segundo. Si hay alguien escuchándonos, que haga el favor de colgar inmediatamente. If we knew who had it, we would have it. But we were expecting you to call on us. So we’ve prepared a profile of the thief.

Si supiésemos quien lo tiene, lo tendríamos nosotros. Pero esperábamos tu visita, así que hemos preparado un perfil del ladrón.

We visited the scene of the theft, which is leprechaun Michael Toora’s house, and the vibes there told us that this person is not the average thief, because all he took was a cheap ornament.

Of course, stealing nothing more than the ornament would make sense if he knew that the check was inside it, but we don’t think he knew this at all. If he had known, he would have made use of the check by now.

To sell or not to sell / Vender o no vender

At this time yesterday, Sir Mungo John Binky was strolling through Minced Forest, thinking to himself a sad soliloquy.

Ayer a estas horas, Sir Mungo John Binky estaba paseando por el bosque Triturado, pensando un triste soliloquio.

I'm so unlucky. I hadn't written a letter asking the Magi for gifts since I was seven. The day before yesterday, I thought of writing one to ask for money for my school. It ocurred to me that if they could give a kid a blank check to solve a problem with, surely they could help me with my own problems. The truth is I deserve that school. I've put a lot of hope and effort into this project. So I write this letter...and what happens? The Magi goes bankrupt.  

¡Qué mala suerte tengo! No había escrito una carta a los Reyes Magos desde que cumplí los siete años. Anteayer se me ocurrió hacerlo para pedir dinero para mi escuela. Se me ocurrió que si le dieron un cheque en blanco a ese niño para un problema suyo, podrían ayudarme con los míos. La verdad es que me merezco esa escuela. He puesto mucha esperanza e ilusión en este proyecto. Pues escribo la carta…¿y qué pasa? Pues que los magos van y quiebran.

Of course there are ways of raising the money. But I don't know...I´m not sure. The truth is that I don't often come to this forest. I don't feel at home here. Not that it is mine. But I could sell it to the dark siders. There are ways to obtain things. Confiscate, expropriate. I've received interesting offers. If I sell it, the buyers will in turn sell it to the mortals. They will cut down all the trees. They'll use the wood, or maybe not even. And they'll start to build. They love to raise those beehive-like buildings. But what would become of those who live here? Although I know they don't like me, I don't want to do these little people any harm. The truth is they have nowhere decent to go. If I get my school in exchange of this forest, well, something will be gained. I would have sacrificed these people for a good purpose. But will they see it that way? I'd better go.  It's starting to snow and there is a crescent moon, but it doesn't give much light. I can't see very well.

Claro que hay maneras de conseguir dinero. Pero no sé…no lo tengo claro. La verdad es que no vengo muy a menudo por este bosque. No me siento a gusto aquí. No es que sea mío. Pero podría vendérselo a los del lado oscuro. Hay maneras de quedarse con las cosas. Expropiar, confiscar. He recibido ofertas interesantes. Si lo vendo, los compradores a su vez se lo revenderían a los humanos. Talarían todos estos árboles. Utilizarían la madera, o tal vez ni siquiera. Y se pondrían a edificar. Les encanta levantar edificios como colmenas. ¿Pero qué sería de los que viven aquí? La verdad es que aunque no les caigo bien, no quisiera hacerle daño a esta gentecilla. No tienen ningún lugar digno al que ir. Si consigo la escuela a cambio, pues algo se habría logrado. Les habría sacrificado para lograr un buen propósito. Ellos deberían entenderlo así. Debería irme. Está empezando a nevar y hay luna, pero sólo creciente. No veo bien.

Yaaaaahhh! I'm falling!

¡Ayyyyyyyyy! ¡Qué me caigo!

True. Mr. Binky fell into a hole full of dead leaves and earthworms and some snow. And inside it, he continued debating with himself, although less comfortably.

Efectivamente, el Sr. Binky cayó dentro de un hoyo lleno de hojas muertas y lombrices y algo de nieve. Y ahí dentro, siguió debatiendo consigo mismo, aunque algo más incómodamente.

This could be a trap those little leaf fairies have prepared for me. They haven't the slightest chance in a fight, but they are quite mean and spunky. Well, I was only thinking, but they may have found out. Maybe there is among them one with a gift for reading minds. Or perhaps they hate me for some other reason. How dreadful! Being here must be like being dead. I hate having to do this, but I suppose it will be necessary to shout.

Esto podría ser una trampa que tienen preparada para mí esas hojitas. No tendrán dos tortas, pero tienen muy mala idea. Pues sólo estaba pensando, pero se han debido de enterar. Tal vez haya alguno entre ellos con el don de leer mentes. O quizás simplemente me odien por otro motivo. ¡Qué horror! Estar aquí debe ser como estar muerto. No me gusta nada hacerlo, pero supongo que tendré que gritar.

Although we have no reason to like you, we'll haul you out. And you know why? Because it's still the Christmas season. Tonight is New Year's Eve. Where will you dine? We'll take you there.

Aunque nos hincha usted las narices, le vamos a sacar. ¿Y sabe por qué? Porque todavía estamos en Navidad. Es Noche Vieja. ¿Dónde va a cenar usted? Le llevaremos allí.

Why, I...I have no idea. The only place that is still open to the public at this hour today is the hamburger place in Wee Elmira. I could have a salad there. But they might poison it because they hate me since I have the need to have their status as a town revoked because the place is so small. We're settling it in court. Well, I...I think I'll just return to my office.  

Pues…no lo sé. El único sitio que hay abierto al público a esta hora hoy es la hamburguesería de  Enanita Elmira. Podría tomar una ensalada ahí, pero quizás me la envenenen, como me odian y estamos de juicio porque tengo necesidad de quitarle a ese lugar tan pequeño el título de pueblo, pues… la verdad, no lo sé. Creo que volveré a la oficina.

Well, the thing to do is invite a beggar to dinner at Christmas, but this year, at least in a figurative sense, many people have a politician sitting at their dinner table, eating up their festive meals. They weren't invited, but you will be, because I am going to invite you to share my dinner. Do you like acorn purée?  

Bueno, lo habitual es invitar a cenar a un pobre en Navidad, pero este año, al menos en sentido figurativo, mucha gente tiene sentado a un político en su mesa, que se ha zampado sus cenas festivas. Esos no estaban invitados, pero a usted, yo le voy a invitar a compartir la mía. ¿Le gusta el puré de bellotas?

And that night Mr. Binky ate acorn purée and a fine piece of a huge roasted chestnut with red berry sauce. He also made a clever, ambiguous speech about the future and the importance of progress that none of those present understood nor took into account. But he didn't eat the traditional twelve grapes for good luck because the Leafies' budget didn't allow for imported foods.  

Y esa noche el Sr. Binky cenó puré de bellotas y un buen pedazo de una gran castaña asada con salsa de frutas del bosque e hizo un hábil discurso muy ambiguo sobre el futuro y el progreso que ninguno de los presentes entendió ni tuvo en cuenta. Pero no tomó las doce uvas de la suerte porque el presupuesto de los Hojita no daba para productos importados.
