The fellow who is falling in the picture below is Hephaistos, the lame god of fire. Most of the gods who lived up on Mount Olympus found him noisy and annoying.

El individuo que se está cayendo en el dibujo de abajo es Hefaistos, el dios cojo del fuego. La mayoría de los dioses que vivían en el Monte Olimpo le encontraban ruidoso e insoportable.

Some people say his mother, the goddess Hera, was fed up with him from the start and flung him out of Mount Olympus when he was a child. Others say he also got into a fight with his father, Zeus, with the same result. This sort of thing is said to happen in the best of families. I wonder.

Algunas personas dicen que su madre, la diosa Hera, se hartó de él desde el principio y le arrojó del Olimpo cuando era aún muy niño.
Otros dicen que también discutió con su padre con el mismo resultado. Se dice que este tipo de cosas ocurren en las mejores familias. No sé.


The case is he once fell during a whole day and a whole night, spinning like a pinwheel. When he finally landed, he may have seriously damaged one of his legs.

El caso es que una vez cayó durante todo un día y una noche, girando como un molinillo de viento. Cuando aterrizó, puede que se hubiese dañado seriamente una de las piernas.

Personally, I think it is more likely that he had a worker´s disease and became lame because he suffered from arsenicosis. Hephaistos was an excellent blacksmith, and in the Bronze Age, those who worked with metals used to add a drop of arsenic to copper to harden it, instead of using tin. From handling this poison many became lame and/or suffered from skin cancer.

Personalmente creo que es más probable que tuviese una enfermedad laboral y se quedase cojo porque sufría de arsenicosis. Hefaistos era un excelente herrero y en la Edad de Bronce, los que trabajaban metales solían añadir una gota de arsénico al cobre para endurecerlo, en vez de utilizar estaño. Por manipular este veneno, muchos se quedaban cojos o sufrían de cáncer de la piel.

Since Hephaistos didn´t get along well with the gods up in heaven, he went to live elsewhere. He spent a while in the sea, where it was difficult for the god of fire to be really annoying. But eventually he moved to a volcano, Mount Aetna. This was his ideal home because it was boiling hot, just the right temperature to melt metals, and he could make all the noise he pleased while he was working.

Puesto que Hefaistos no se llevaba bien con los dioses del cielo, se fue a vivir a otra parte. Pasó un tiempo en el mar, donde era difícil que el dios del fuego resultase molesto. Pero eventualmente se mudó a un volcán, el Monte Etna. Este era su hogar ideal porque hacía un calor de muerte, ideal para fundir metales, y podía hacer todo el ruido que le diese la gana mientras trabajaba.




He was an excellent crafstman and made all sorts of wonderful objects, some beautiful and some terrible. He made a gorgeous silver and sapphire necklace for the beautiful sea goddess Thetis, who regarded him as her foster son and with whom he got along much better than with his real mother. It may have looked like this necklace you can buy at Macy´s.

Era un excelente artesano y fabricó toda clase de objetos, algunos bellísimos y otros terribles. Fabricó un estupendo collar de plata y zafiros para Tetis, la hermosa diosa del mar que le consideraba su hijo adoptivo y con la que se llevaba mejor que con su madre biológica. Puede que se pareciese a este collar que puedes comprar en los grandes almacenes Macy´s.



He made six female robots out of gold, four to help him with his work at home and at the forge and two to be singers at Apollo´s temple in Delphi and he even managed to give them such beautiful voices that they were known as the Swallows.

Hizo seis robots femeninos de oro, cuatro para que le ayudasen con el trabajo del hogar y de la forja y dos destinadas a ser cantantes en el templo de Apolo en Delfos y hasta consiguió darles unas voces tan bonitas que las apodaron Las Golondrinas.

Hephaistos also had other assistants. These were the Cyclopes or Cyclopses, a tribe of one-eyed giants. With their help he fashioned thunderbolts for his father, the storm god Zeus.

Hefaistos también tenía otros ayudantes. Estos eran los Cíclopes, una tibu de gigantes con un sólo ojo. Con su ayuda fabricaba los rayos para sus padre, Zeus, dios de las tormentas.
