The usual. Watching the telly in case I catch sight of Donald. You don´t come round much to ask if you can watch my telly lately do you?

Nah! I´ve only here to ask you to invite me to breakfast. I´ve a telly of my own now. Bigger and better than that piece of junk of yours. I know you keep it for sentimental reasons, but it sure is outdated. Did Mr. Donald get to say anything to you lately?

¡Nah! Sólo estoy aquí para que me invite a desayunar.Tengo una tele propia ahora. Más grande y mejor que ese pedazo de chatarra que tiene usted. Sé que la conserva por razones sentimentales, pero está realmente anticuada. ¿Le ha dicho el Sr. Donald algo últimamente?

No, not Donald. But I can´t help wondering about some things I hear when I watch the Spanish channels. Alpin, do you have any idea why, when someone on Spanish TV has to say something in English they never bother to find out how it is properly pronounced in English but don´t pronounce it the way it can be pronounced in Spanish either?

No, Donald, no. Pero no puedo dejar de preguntarme de que van ciertas cosas que oigo cuando veo los canales españoles. Alpin, ¿tienes idea de por qué, cuando alguien de un canal español tiene que decir algo en inglés, nunca se molestan en averiguar como se pronuncia correctamente en inglés ni tampoco lo pronuncian como se diría en español?

I know what you mean. They just choose a vowel from one of the words, pronounce it wrong, and make everyone who is learning English confused. Many people really trust TV and deeply believe they do everything right. Later students argue with their English teachers and insist the pronunciation they heard on TV is the right one. There is no making them see reason even with a dictionary in hand. Some even argue as if possessed.

Se lo que está diciendo. Sólo eligen una vocal de una de las palabras, la pronuncian mal, y hacen que todos los que están aprendiendo inglés se confundan. Mucha gente se fía plenamente de la tele y cree profundamente que la tele no puede equivocarse. Luego los estudiantes discuten con sus profesores de inglés e insisten en que la pronunciación que oyeron en la tele es la correcta. No se les puede convencer de lo contrario ni con el diccionario en la mano. Algunos hasta se ponen como energúmenos.

Exactly. We all make mistakes. But my question is, do they do this on purpose? The last thing I heard was the mispronunciation of the name of the band “Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Now, if they had just said the name in Spanish, they would have got it right both in English and Spanish, but no. They had to pronounce peppers with a long e. Look!

Exactamente. Todos cometemos errores. Pero mi pregunta es, ¿lo hacen a propósito? Lo último que he escuchado es la pronunciación equivocada del nombre de la banda “Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Ahora, si se hubiesen limitado a pronunciar ese nombre inglés a la española, hubiesen acertado tanto en español como en inglés, pero no. Tuvieron que pronunciar peppers con una e larga. ¡Mira!

A person who, trying to remain unseen,  spies on others when he or she should be looking another way is called a Peeping Tom. Which brings us to the story of Lady Godiva, wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia.

La persona que espía a escondidas a otros cuando debería estar mirando para otra parte recibe en inglés el nombre de “Peeping Tom.” Lo cual nos lleva a la historia de Doña Godiva , esposa de Leofrico, conde de Mercia.

I know that story. And I´m going to tell it to you if you invite me to breakfast.

Me sé ese cuento. Y se lo contaré a usted si me invita a desayunar.

Lady Godiva was a good woman who was very popular among her people because she was reasonable about most things. Her husband, however, was not much liked by his subjects because he was always making them pay unjust taxes.

Doña Godiva era una buena mujer que era muy popular entre su gente porque era razonable en la mayoría de las cosas. Su marido, sin embargo, no era del gusto de sus súbditos porque siempre les estaba haciendo pagar impuestos injustos.

Now, many taxes are unpopular, but there was one tax that was considered particularly unfair by the people of Coventry, a town that was part of Lady Godiva´s property. It was a tax that was being raised to pay for a special group of bodyguards for King Canute. Yes, this was in the 11th century and I should have said that earlier. Godiva and Leofric got into a huge argument about whether or not this tax should be paid.

Es cierto que muchos impuestos son poco populares, pero había uno que era considerado especialmente injusto por la gente de Coventry, pueblo que era parte del patrimonio de Doña Godiva. Se trataba de un impuesto que se recaudaba para pagarle una guardia especial al Rey Canuto. Sí, esto ocurrió en el siglo once y debí decirlo antes. Godiva y Leofrico tuvieron una acalorada discusión sobre si se debía de pagar o no este impuesto.



Leofric told Godiva that she couldn´t live as well as she did without the money they raised from taxes, so she had better not criticize anyone else who wanted to get hold of tax money. “It´s as if I asked you to stop spending the taxpayers´ money on jewels and fine dresses, so shut up! ” said Leofric.

Leofrico le dijo a Godiva que ella no podría vivir tan bien como lo hacía si no fuese por el dinero que recaudaban con los impuestos, así que mejor se callaba en vez de criticar a otros que también querían hacerse con el dinero de los contribuyentes. “Es como si yo te pidiese que dejases de gastar el dinero de los contribuyentes en vestidos caros y joyas, así que te toca callar.”

Godiva said she could do without jewels and fine dresses, and if Canute could not do without special bodyguards, it was probably his own fault. But Leofric laughed in her face and dared her to parade through the town of Coventry naked. He said that if she were capable of doing that, he wouldn´t force people to pay the bodyguard tax.

Godiva dijo que podía pasar sin joyas y vestidos caros y que si Canuto no podía pasar sin una guardia especial probablemente era por su propia culpa. Pero Leofrico se rió en su cara y la desafió a pasearse desnuda por el pueblo de Coventry. Dijo que si ella era capaz de hacer eso, él no forzaría a la gente a pagar el impuesto para la guardia especial de Canuto.

“I´ll ride through Coventry without clothes and without bodyguards!” said Godiva. She was that sure the people of Coventry liked her, and would not attack or insult her when she went naked through that town.

"¡Pasearé sin ropa y sin guardaespaldas por Coventry!" dijo Godiva. Así de segura estaba de que la gente de Coventry la quería y no la atacaría ni insultaría cuando pasase desnuda por ese pueblo.

Word spread about the bet between Godiva and Leofric. The people of Coventry all agreed to stay at home and bar the windows on the day Godiva would pass naked through their town. And when Godiva, covered only by her long hair, rode into Coventry on a horse led by a single aged servant, nobody came out to watch and all the windows were barred, save one.

La noticia de la apuesta entre Godiva y Leofrico se extendió. La gente de Coventry acordó quedarse en casa y tapar las ventanas el día que Godiva fuese a pasear desnuda por su pueblo. Y cuando Godiva, cubierta sólo por su larga melena, entró en Coventry montada en un caballo guiado por un sólo sirviente anciano, nadie salió a mirar, y todas las ventanas menos una permanecieron tapadas.



A tailor named Tom couldn´t resist peeping out of his window. Legend tells the man was struck blind by divine justice right there. As for Leofric, he was so impressed by what his wife had done that he annulled the bodyguard tax.

Un sastre llamado Tomás no pudo resistir echar una miradita por su ventana. Cuenta la leyenda que la justicia divina le dejó ciego en el acto. En cuanto a Leofrico, quedó tan impresionado por lo que había hecho su mujer que anuló el impuesto de la guardia.
