I had better tell you about today myself. Today, in lots of cities and countries they are celebrating the feast of their patron saint, George.


Será mejor que os hable del día de hoy yo mismo. Hoy, en muchas ciudades y países están celebrando el día de su santo patrón, San Jorge.

England, for example has St. George for a patron saint, and "For England and St. George!" was a popular battlecry. They also celebrate St. George´s day in Catalonia, where men give women red roses and women give men a book. Are you wondering if this means women aren´t smart enough to read a book? No. It means men haven´t got noses to sniff roses with.


Inglaterra, por ejemplo tiene por patrón a San Jorge y "¡Por Inglaterra y San Jorge!" era un grito de guerra muy popular. También celebran el día de San Jorge en Cataluña, donde es tradicion que los hombres regalen rosas a las mujeres y que las mujeres regalen libros a los hombres.¿Te estás preguntando si esto es porque las mujeres no son lo bastante listas como para saber leer un libro? Pues no es por eso. Es porque los hombres no tienen narices con las que oler rosas.

That was a joke. People usually are good at anything they are allowed to be good at if they want to be good at it and make an effort. And every day that passes, more and more of them are aware of that and aren´t afraid to read books or sniff roses.

Eso era broma. Casi todas las personas son buenas haciendo algo que realmente quieren hacer si se les deja hacerlo. Y afortunadamente cada día hay más personas que son conscientes de que pueden disfrutar tanto de los libros como de las rosas.







Now, the picture above is about St. George. He is the person sitting on the horse and piercing the dragon with his lance. The dragon represents evil. And the lady represents the church. These symbols mean that St. George fought to defend the church from its enemies. St. George is said to have lived and been martyred during the last of the persecutions that the Roman government launched against the Christians. The picture doesn´t mean dragons are all bad. Some are good and some are bad and some are so-so, like everyone else. It means that the Roman government and the Christians weren´t solving their differences peacefully, which was a pity. Other people are luckier. They are able to discuss things and reach agreements.

Bien, pues el cuadro de arriba es sobre San Jorge. El es la persona que hay montada a caballo
que está atravesando al dragón con su lanza. El dragón representa el mal. Y la dama representa a la Iglesia. Estos símbolos significan que San Jorge luchó para defender a la Iglesia de sus enemigos. Se dice que San Jorge fue martir durante la última de las persecuciones que organizó el gobierno de Roma contra los cristianos. El cuadro no significa que los dragones son todos malos. Algunos dragones son buenos, otros son malos y otros ni fu ni fa, como casi todo el mundo. Significa que el gobierno de Roma y los cristianos no estaban solucionando sus diferencias pacíficamente, lo cual era una lástima. Otras personas tienen más suerte. Pueden dialogar y llegar a un acuerdo.







Since April 23 is also Book Day in Spain, I want to recommend a book about two creatures that did solve their differences peacefully.



Puesto que el 23 de abril también es el día del libro, os voy a recomendar uno sobre dos criaturas que resolvieron sus diferencias pacíficamente.

It is important to remember on a day that intellectuals celebrate that one of their main functions is to mediate and find peaceful solutions to problems.

En uno de los días que celebran los intelectuales, es importante recordar que una de sus principales funciones es la de mediar y encontrar soluciones pacíficas a los problemas que van surgiendo.
