No Name Day Party Yet / Todavía sin fiesta del nombre

Three days after a fairy child is born, its parents give a party. Friends and relatives gather to meet the new baby and to hear it say the name by which it wishes to be called.

Tres días después de que nazca un hada, sus padres dan una fiesta. Amigos y parientes se reúnen para conocer al nuevo bebé y escucharle decir el nombre por el que desea ser llamado.

Yes, the baby fairies choose their own name and they say it out loud because fairies can speak only a few minutes after being born. The average fairy child starts speaking as soon as it has been claimed by its parents. After a very little while in their company, it gets to trust them and tells them that important secret, its name.

Sí, los bebés de las hadas eligen su propio nombre y lo dicen en alto porque las hadas pueden hablar a los pocos minutos de nacer. El bebé hada medio rompe a hablar en cuanto ha sido reclamado por sus padres. Tras un ratito en su compañía llega a fiarse de ellos y les dice ese importante secreto que es su nombre.

For yes, names are important secrets in Fairyland. Fairies don’t tell just anyone their names, and if you don’t know a particular fairy’s name, it is because you are not formally acquainted with that fairy. Even if you have come to learn a fairy’s name from others, you must not call her or him by it until she or he tells it to you herself or himself. If he or she does, it means he or she trusts you, and recognizes your existence, admitting you into his or her world.

Pues sí, los nombres son secretos importantes en el mundo de las hadas. Las hadas no le dicen su nombre a cualquiera, y si no conoces el nombre de un hada en particular, es porque no has llegado a conocerla formalmente. Aunque conozcas el nombre de un hada por otros, no debes usarlo ante él o ella hasta que él o ella te lo diga personalmente. Si lo hace, significa que reconoce tu existencia y te deja formar parte de su mundo.

Baby fairies who are not claimed by parents grow up to be very secretive and mistrustful. Many of these feel only at home with the birds and the trees that dwell in their habitat. Some have never spoken their name out loud and never will. Yes, Name Day is a very special day for a little fairy. It is the fairy equivalent of a christening and the little fairy’s friends and family bring her or him wonderful gifts, some of which are so magical that they are invaluable.

Los bebés hada que no son reclamados por sus padres crecen para ser muy misteriosos y huraños. Muchos de ellos sólo se sienten a gusto con los pájaros y árboles de su hábitat. Algunos jamás han dicho ni dirán su nombre en alto. Sí, el Día del Nombre es un día muy especial para un hada pequeña. Es el equivalente de un bautizo y los amigos y parientes del bebé le traen maravillosos regalos, algunos de los cuales son tan mágicos que no tienen precio.

Tell me your name, honey. If you do, we will give a spendid party for you and you will get loads of lovely presents.

He estado sentado aquí contigo durante más de una semana sin hacer otra cosa que preguntarte cómo te llamas. ¿Acaso tanta atención no merece un poco de gratitud? Dime tu nombre, princesa. Si lo haces, daré una esplendida fiesta para ti y recibirás montones de regalos preciosos.

Come on, honey. Daddy is exhausted from sitting here night and day watching over you and waiting for you to say something. If you can’t think of any name yourself, all you have to do is listen and repeat. Come on. Listen and repeat one of these names. Lily? Li-ly. Rosie? Ro-sie. Daisy. Dai-sy.

Come on, kid. Say something or I will tell the world they can call you Eustachiana. It’s not that bad a name if you think of it. Nice meaning. And it is the name of one of my grandmothers. Violet? Surely you like Violet. Little girls love Violet. Come on, darling. Vi-o-let. Listen, sweetie, it will do if you say Vi.

Venga, niña. Di algo o anunciaré al mundo que te pueden llamar Eustiquiana. No es tan mal nombre si lo piensas. Tiene un significado bonito y es el nombre de una de mis abuelas. ¿Violeta? Seguro que te gusta Violeta. A todas las niñas les gusta Violeta. Venga, carino. Vi-o-le-ta. Mira,nena, bastará con que digas Fe.

Why don’t you shut up? How can she get a word in if you don’t stop talking? Nothing like this has ever happened to us before. All my children spoke out their name two or three minutes after being first cuddled by us.

¿Por qué no te callas? ¿Cómo va a decir nada si tú no dejas de hablar? Nada como esto nos ha sucedido antes. Todos mis hijos dijeron su nombre  dos o tres minutos después de abrazarles por primera vez.

Heather’s first words were,“Thank you,” when we found her shivering in the heath under a harebell on a stormy night and covered her with a woolen scarf to protect her from the pouring rain.

Las primeras palabras de Heather fueron, “Muchas gracias,” cuando la encontramos tiritando en los páramos bajo una campanilla azul en una noche tormentosa y la cubrimos con una bufanda de lana para protegerla de la lluvia.

Arley greeted us in verse when he spoke for the first time, sitting among larks and nightingales under the tree  Shakespeare planted.

Arley nos saludo en verso cuando habló por primera vez, sentadito entre alondras y ruiseñores bajo el árbol que plantó Shakespeare.

And Thistle…she was like a fakir on a cardus benedictus, surrounded by buzzing bees under the sun, whispering little buzzing noises herself. She looked us straight in the eye and asked, “Are you going to take me home with you?” Of course we were.

¿Y Cardo? Parecía un faquir sobre un cardo benedicto rodeada de abejas que zumbaban suavemente bajo el sol. Ella susurraba pequeños zumbidos hasta que nos vió y nos miró a los ojos y preguntó “¿Me llevareis a casa con vosotros?” Pues claro que lo hicimos.

All the others had a lot to say for themselves too. And as if it weren’t bad enough our new child remains mute, she has learned to fly before speaking. Now we´ll have to watch her every minute of the day and even put bars on the nursery windows, something we´ve never had to do before. How can we trust her if she doesn’t tell us her intentions?

Todos los demás también tenían mucho que decir. Y como si fuera poco que nuestra nueva hija permanezca muda, encima ha aprendido a volar antes que a hablar. Ahora tendremos que vigilarla cada minuto del día y hasta poner barrotes en las ventanas de la planta de los niños, cosa que jamás hemos tenido que hacer antes. ¿Cómo vamos a fiarnos de ella si no nos cuenta sus intenciones?

Tal vez dijo Ivy, que es Hiedra en inglés.

Yes. She probably wants a name that will match with ours. We´re your role models, aren’t we, baby? Say Ivy.

Sí. Probablemente quiera un nombre que se parezca a los nuestros. Somos tus modelos a seguir, verdad, pequeña? Di Ivy. Di Hiedra.

Ibex doesn’t just have a financial meaning. It also means Pyrenean wild goat. I just looked it up in my pocket encyclopedia.

Ibex no sólo tiene un significado financiero. También significa cabra salvaje de los Pirineos. Lo acabo de buscar en mi enciclopedia de bolsillo.

No way! My child isn’t going to be called Wild Goat just because her brother is a geek who goes everywhere with an encyclopedia in his pocket.

Ni hablar. Mi hija no se va a llamar Cabra Montesa sólo porque su hermano sea un empollón que va a todas partes con una enciclopedia en el bolsillo.

Alright, I haven’t said anything. And maybe the baby hasn’t either. She may just have burped. In any case, whatever she says, she must say it loud and clear in front of the guests at her Name Day party. If they don’t understand what she says, the event will be meaningless.

Vale, no he dicho nada. Y tal vez la niña tampoco. Puede que sólo haya eructado. De todas formas, diga lo que diga, tendrá que decirlo bien claro delante de todos los invitados a su fiesta del Día del Nombre. Si no la entienden, la fiesta no tendrá sentido.
